May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month
FAIRFAX, Va. -- May marks National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns families that cockroaches are a leading trigger of allergies and asthma attacks. The pests' saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies contain allergen proteins known to trigger allergies and increase the severity of asthma symptoms, especially in children.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma rates climbed to 8.2 percent in 2009 from 7.3 percent in 2001. In children, the rate of asthma was 9.6 percent in 2009 compared to 8.7 percent in 2001.
Any cockroach body part-derived allergen; 30 to 75% of children in US inner cities are allergic to cockroach allergen, in contrast to almost no children in the suburbs; cockroach allergen appears to worsen asthma symptoms more than either dust mite or pet allergens; cockroach allergens are the primary contributor to childhood asthma in inner-city home environments
I found this info on a medical site.
