popular practice is to glue and assemble a project before finishing. this way, any 'squeeze-out' of adhesive or glue can be removed after the material has dried, then, satins and finishes can be applied. however, stains and finishes can be applied before assembly if care is taken to insure that mating joints are clean and free from materials that impede the bonding attributes of aliphatic glues, ie: elmers, titebond or gorilla.
