Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction, then add the numerator of the fraction and use this number as the numerator of the improper fraction. The denominator of the improper fraction is the same as the denominator of the fraction in the mixed numeral.
    8 x 5 + 1 = 41 (this is the numerator of the improper fraction).
The denominator of the improper fraction is 8.
    Therefore the answer is 41/8.
The denomination of the fraction (if you want) can/will be 8 (1/8s).
so the mixed number, 5 1/8 coverts to 5x1/8s giving a total of 40/8 to add to the 1/8 in the number giving an improper fraction 41/8. Done
