To add light exposure to your mac screen, you can do two things. None are related to the program you're currently running but to the screen settings.
First, if you have on your keyboard a key with the icon of a sun (circle surrounded by rays) click it to lighten/ darken your screen. Depending on your keyboard, it should be F1 for darkening, F2 for increasing brightness.
Alternatively, you can open the System Preferences app (located on your Dock and in the Applications folder) > Displays > push the brightness bar to right or left to adjust screen brightness.
