    May I ask a favour?

Time again to thank you all for your answers and comments and the thumbs up. The karma points are not what I am about but the thumbs up show me that I am in synch with mainstream ideas and ideals not only in my own country but others as well. The comments disagreeing with me are also welcome as they give me a different slant on my own presumptions.
Oh! I was gong to ask a favour wasn`t I?

If you give me a thumbs down would you please tell me what your reason for that action was as again this will assist me and who knows ,perish the thought I may be wrong, hard to believe as it may be I could be.

I promise I wont come through cyber space and hunt you down "and rip your bloody arms off" (With thanks to Aunty Jack) Don`t worry I have not gone bonkers the older Australians will understand the Aunty Jack bit, it was a local comedy show back when television was black and white. I might add a lot simpler also.

Ok, Ok, I will shut up now, bloody people, wont even let you ask a simple question.

I believe the only TD's I got was on a religious answer, no reason, just by someone that don't agree with me.
    PEOPLELOVER

That was probably me when I was young and mean, now I am young and not mean.
    Headless Man

At least your young, how did you do that?
    PEOPLELOVER

Easy I was born in 1932 so I kid myself I am 32 but do not "MEAN" it.
    Headless Man

Good if you can do it...........lol
A TD is deserving of an explanation. I don't care about Karma points, but it would be nice to know why.
    melandrupert

Tu good and here is the explanation good answer
I appreciate my thumbs up also, but sometimes i wonder is it just people being nice. When i give my votes out i truly agree with the answers, and a brief explanation would be good if we get a thumbs down.
    PEOPLELOVER

Well I will be nice too. No pythonlover I only, like yourself, give thumbs up to what I believe are good answer or ones that give me a laugh.

Ha Ha your hilarious, people being nice Ha Ha. In your dreams sunshine.

Psssst, we're trying no to promote the "that was funny" answer. We can appreciate a laugh but the top answer should always be the correct answer to the question ;) The admins vision of akaQA is for this forum to be like Wiki-answers or Yahoo-answers so that when people google for an answer to something, we come up with a correct answer to the question, not some smart ass or funny comment. Having correct answers will give this site respectability on the 'net and hopefully draw in more members to answer questions that sometimes we can not answer but a new member might be able to answer. Lately though the funny answers are making it as the top chosen answer from the members (which actually makes us look like we don't know a whole lot) even though it has nothing to do with the question and for sure does not answer the question.
    Tommyh

Gotta admit I'm guilty Colleen.(Funny answers). But really.... some questions are just begging for it.When I do give a funny answer I usually give a TU as well just because the question amused me.
    ed shank

Once several members have given a legitimate answer, to respond with a little humor afterwords is fun. Anyone who has taken the time to visit this site for even a short time will see that the people here are knowledgeable and caring. We don't make light of serious issues.

I have done both Tommy, I might give a funny answer but in the same comment, I will give the correct answer. As ed said, if there are enough serious answers and the question does beg for a funny, fine. The trouble comes when the funny one goes in first and then there is nothing but funny ones trying to out funny the last one. Finally someone might put in a real answer but it gets buried under the funny ones and doesn't get the TU's it deserves.
    Ms Sinclair

I agree with Tommyh. I don't think that there's anything wrong with a little humor and, as he said, some so called questions beg for that kind of response.
I too appreciate thumbs up, but think they should be given only if you truly agree with the answer, or feel the question is a good one. The rare thumbs down I have given have been reserved for someone being rude. A thumbs down should never be given just because you don't agree with the answer (my opinion).

    Perfect :)
    Dollybird

When a person does not agree with answer, and a thumbs down should never be given, should a person then just ignore answer, and give no thumds at all? This is what I have been doing.
    Flip

@ Dollybird: That's what I do also, but I may give my interpretation of the correct answer (depending on the situation).
Because I am different? I have no idea how I ended up with a odd number, I mean I have been accused of being odd but this one eludes me.
Didn`t even notice umbriel until your message.

    Anyone got any clues?

    See Umbriel's question.
    leeroy

I left them a message and suggested that they could make a explanation option for a thumbs down or even a thumbs up, it would be a cool addition to the format.
    PEOPLELOVER

Good idea leeroy, see you are smart after all. :)
I agree about the TD, explanation at least, but who could do that to You PPL?
    PEOPLELOVER

Bevs I can understand why you ask why someone would vote me down on my incredably correct, never wrong, comments.

The only reason I can think of is they are not as smart as us humans.

    bulletman

HUMANS = Australians oops can see a td coming.
I have said this before, thumbs up talk for themselves but if you give a thumbs down, it is only proper etiquette that you explain why. A person giving thumbs down then leaving is more like a slap in the face and then running away to avoid confrontation. That is a wuss in my book.
a tu could also mean Thank U
I gave someone a TD once and that did not need an explanation. I never give anyone a TD because they have a different opinion.
I really enjoy the diversity on this site.
    IamPamela313

I have not used the TD since joining this site, but as you say, I enjoy the different opinion's and views!
bulletman here, i have never given TD, i believe if you don't like', agree with the answer i just do't acknowledge it, i must admit that i can be sarcastic at times, a litte humour goes a long way but my pet hate is using google, yahoo etc., for answers or giving sites to goto, its much better to go with your own feelings for the answer. if you don't know the answer you, don't know the answer, simple. i do agree with my fellow compatriot, peoplelover if you do happen to get a thumbs down , a short explanation would be appreciated, other than that 'I LOVE THIS SITE.'
    melandrupert

yes Bullitman really agree on this as I have commented before it should come in what you know and come in and answer from your fellings and hey if you get it wrong at least you have tried
Good thinking here, maybe Colleen and you all could suggest that with a thumbs down there could be an optional explanation? I will as well. I rarely give a TD for the same reasons listed above.
I got a TD once and I don't know the reason. I checked my answer 3 times and I know it was right. The person who gave it to me had zero karma so I assumed he was just getting rid of his points or whatever. I only give TU to answer's I agree with or I like for one reason or another, yes it could be because it made me laugh. But not usually, mostly because it's the right answer, and I agree with it.
I have gone back to ask ppl why they have given me a TD.. I never get an answer. And I have gotten them for strange things. I would love to know why.. I think sometimes ppl dont agree with my piont of view, but that shouldnt rate a TD. Ofencive or bad advice I can see but to give someone a TD for liking blue and not red is petty.
I think I have given 3 TD during my stint here on AKA.
    PEOPLELOVER

Hi! Jen you are correct in saying a lot of people do
    not respond to your comments.

I want NEGATIVE feed back as much as POSITIVE feed back because, how else can I expand my knowledge of people and their feelings on subjects.

There can be cultural differences that we need to understand and these differences occur in all nationalities.
    Jenn

YES!!!! Thank you. That is why I ask about the TD. I think they assume I want to 'fight'... But I am genuinely interested in thier piont of view.
    melandrupert

thanks Jenn I have given you a Tu for a good answer
    Sure
I gave you a thumbs up on the hitchhiker story really funny about your Dad wanting to plant potatoes and was not up to it and telling careful I hid a hitchhiker in the back yard you know the rest that made me laugh
    whovin

Thank you for the thumb ups
I give TD so rarely that I cant remember the last time I did, when someone is highly offensive or just plain unnecessarily vulgar,it's tempting, not agreeing with someone isn't cause enough or just doesn't justify a TD at least in my opinion anyway.:)
