The fist most important ingredient to bring to your cause is always organization. If you can get everything organized and attract many people to your cause that will be the second most valuable ingredient to your cause,"Awareness."
Once you have those two essential steps or ingredients secured towards your cause you can have the strength of numbers. If only one person boycotts something it's goes unnoticed by anyone... But if you add many to your cause, then a boycott is very much effective.
All major companies keep track of their sales statistics, if they notice that sales are down in certain areas or across the board, you will get their attention. The wallet or purse is always the best place to get a company to notice your grievance. It would also be helpful to email the company letting them know your intentions so you can use their response in your campaign.

All too often boycotts however well intentioned become very emotional and property damages occur. It than loses it's validity.
It helps if you notify the company of the boycott, and the reason why. Then let them know the number of people that are starting the boycott, and how many more will join in, in the future. So if for example, you say that 100 people are boycotting, and in 10 days it will be 1000, and 30 days you expect the number to be 10000, or whatever, will make a bigger impact than just quietly having a boycott.
