You need to identify if you are just mildly unhappy or if you are clinically depressed. Depression is your mind and body's way of telling you that something(s) is(are) wrong in your life and that you need to identify it(them) and make changes...Many say depression is "anger turned inwards". For me I find this to be true. Sometimes it is very hard for people to identify the cause. That is where psychology and mental health professionals can help. Also, yes for many ....religion and spirituality can also help tremendously.
If you are consistently unhappy for more than three weeks in a row, you may be clinically depressed and may need to get help. Contact your local mental health facilities provided by your county or call a suicide hotline (I am sure many will criticize me for suggesting this as an abuse of what the hotline is for, but it is what comes to mind at the moment.) and ask for resources.
There is a list of questions you can ask yourself to determine if you are clinically depressed, mental health professionals should all have access to this list. Once you go through that list and can determine to what degree of depression you are going through, you should also do the questionnaire about current stresses in your life and what degree or level of stress you are undergoing. Armed with that information you can then proceed to determine a course of action.
Your problem may be biochemical and so serious you need to see the kind of Psychology professional that prescribes medication. You may need to check into an emergency room and get immediate help...it depends on how serious. You should also meet with your doctor and have labs run to determine if there is anything wrong physically with you. (In my case, I did have some hormonal problems that required some thyroid and estrogen to help. I also discovered that I had diabetes....boy what a mood swing problem that causes if gone unawares!)
Your unhappiness may be something as simple as making a list of the things in your life that are bothering you and discussing them with a trusted friend, or an elder at your church. Maybe you are in a bad relationship but are having difficulty facing the fact. Maybe you have an awful work situation or money troubles or a car that is unreliable... there are so many things in our lives that can really drain us if we don't face them and then take positive steps to fix them.
ABOVE ALL REMEMBER
1)YOU ARE NOT ALONE! EVERYONE EXPERIENCES UNHAPPINESS AT TIMES!
2) DEPRESSION IS A LIAR!...it wants you to think it will never end and that there is no hope or help, that life for you will always feel like this. Don't believe it! Depression just like Joy or any other emotion in this life is temporary.
3) YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM HERE! Take responsibility for how you are feeling. Identify the degree and nature of the problem and identify what decisions you have made that led you to where you are today. Then come up with a plan of action. You may need to get major help, or just make a list of your ultimate goals and dreams and then break them down into manageable projects with baby steps towards getting there.
4) KNOW THAT EVERY LITTLE THING POSITIVE YOU DO FOR YOURSELF WILL HAVE A POWERFUL IMPACT TOWARDS MAKING YOU FEEL BETTER. Go for a walk...Exercise really really helps! Take a hot bubble bath with candles and great music. You will find, just taking the time to make your list of what the things are in your life that are bothering you and what are the steps you can take to fix them will make you feel tons better.
Lastly, many believe that "We are not just human beings having a Spiritual experience but that we are Spiritual beings having a human experience." Either way, acknowledge and respect the spiritual aspect of your being. Don't neglect it or ignore it, come to terms with it, come to peace with it. For me, having a born-again experience with Jesus Christ lifted the dark filter over my eyes and allowed me to see more clearly and experience joy again.
I was suicidally depressed for years, had plans and backup plans for the plans....but you don't have to let it go that far. Don't let the problems in your life pile up too high. Identify em and attack em and do whatever you need to do to make sense of it and get help. THERE IS HELP AVAILABLE...LOTS OF IT....DON'T SUFFER IN SILENCE AND DON'T WASTE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE FEELING THIS WAY. LIFE IS A BEAUTIFUL GIFT, ENJOY IT!
I really hope this helps and I apologize to all that think my response was overkill.

how wonderfully true!
Your life can be a mess but if you don't do something it may never change, my life got bad but after I did one thing I could deal with it and eventually it got better.
Yes, if you do one thing, accept a free gift. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Just say yes and mean it, tell others about your choice, then live it, and find a good BIBLE teaching Church. Read the BIBLE yourself and study.

Please. Maybe their family is not filling it. Sometimes it's just life and not God. A person can love God but still find that life is not filling their needs. Life is not as simple as saying find God and everything will be perfect.
I'll tell you a secret to be happy. Try to have a positive attitude towards your life. I promise you will be happier than ever.
