I was arrested and charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance (METH) in 2004 and I have since been clean and have not been in any trouble except 1 car accident, and a simple possession of a pot pipe that wasn't even mine.so my question is should i begin applying for jobs that do background checks

The lastest methods used in performing background checks will search for postings you have made such as this one. Then they will use it to determine your background check automatically. Currently FACEBOOK, and similar sites are the most popular sites chosen by such vendors to use, but be careful as advancements in this area are made it will become easier to include more and more sites. Right now you can get free tools off the internet that will allow you to get anyone's address that sends you an email using an ISP.

Most major companies only go 7 years back on criminal background checks. Read most application and it specifically asked have you been convicted of a felony in the past blank years. You can also put down on the application "wish to discuss during interview". This gives you an opportunity to explain you were dumb and young and were in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you are the top candidate they want for a job, after 7 years has passed, you will get the job. Best of Luck

SORRY Raider, BUTT you can't be at the wrong place at the wrong time.Or you would not be there. You can be though, at the right place at the wrong time. OR wrong place at the right time to be arrested. There are TWO parts to an occurrence. One objective one subjective. From Two perspectives. Like an accident at least ONE party has to make the mistake butt not both. Although that can happen also !

I like the part about being caught with a pot pipe that was not yours, seems like I've heard that one before in many differernt forms ?

I borrowed a car and there was pot in the ashtray.. so I can't say it would never happen.... But I have no record either.

I am going through the same thing with my husband, he made mistakes in the past but has not got into any trouble in years,he has been turned down for jobs such as home depot and target, after seven years you will be fine,it just takes patience and determination, everyone should be given the chance to start over,we are only human.Keep your head up and god bless.

Yeah, but my husbands record is not showing up past seven years,a lot of employers will only go back seven years,it depends on the type of background that is run. It's tough I know,it's always easier when you know someone.Good luck.

NO THAT IS NOT TRUE THAT U WILL BE OK AFTER 7 YEARS I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM ONLY MINE WAS WITH A SCHEDULE 3 DRUG IT HAPPENED IN 1999 IT IS 2011 IT IS STILL ON MY RECORD STILL SHOWS UP I WAS YOUNG MADE ONE DUMB MISTAKE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT SINCE I DONT EVEN DRINK I HAD A WONDERFUL LAWYER BUT IT DOESNT GO AWAY SOMETIMES I HAVE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO GET ONE JOB SINCE THAT HAPPENED AND THE ONLY REASON SHE GAVE ME THE JOB IS BECAUSE SHE KNEW ME I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL WENT TO COLLEGE IT STILL SHOWS UP

Apply everywhere you can, avoiding the mainstream department stores because they
all do background checks, unless you are desperate because sometimes they miss
something. You have nothing to lose by applying, you can't go to jail for applying
for a job, know what I mean? =]

I run backgrounds in my company and we do not tolorate those people who is not honest about their background in application, so my suggestion is if you apply be very honest about your background because you cant hide them, it will come up on your background report. Lot of people over in my company gets the job just because they have been honest.

Why not try to open up your own business. You are clearly internet savvy, there are plenty of opportunities out there.

Aply but don't try and hide stuff.

Another option, as about getting your case expunged(sealed)so no one can look at it, that is how a lot of convicted felons get their rights restored.Best of Luck!!
