Never try to run away, never turn your back on the dogs, they will sense your fear and try to run you down, that is pack mentality. It is better to try to stand up to them and yell to go away. I realize 99.9% of people are not going to do that, they are too afraid. Without a weapon in your hand, a gun, knife, shovel, large stick to fend them off you could try to kick at them. Taking them by surprise is often the best thing you can do, but it is something most people won't think about in this situation. One thing is for sure, yelling at the top of your lungs for help and looking for something to defend yourself with should be top priority.

just keep calm the dog is more frighten of you never turn your back and never run and try and make your self seem bigger if you can you could try shouting at the dog and if you think it is going to lurch forward try going into a ball so the dog cant to any vital organs if there is a stick do try to defend your selve and never look into the dogs eyes as this means war hope it never happens

In NJ if you own a PIT or ROT, you must show proof of liability insurance with minimum 500K coverage, or dogs will be confiscated.

A relative told me to give a karate chop on the top of the nose. He said he's killed attacking dogs that way. I don't know about a pit bulls though. Two pit bulls can bring down one tiger. Some people in Indonesia hunt with pit bulls.

When I was 15 I had a large bull dog come charging towards my friend and I as we were walking though a neighborhood. My friend took off and ran in the opposite direction, while I just stood my ground and stopped in the middle of the street.

As the dog approached me it was surprised to see my reaction and slowed it's charge, but kept approaching me and barking. The second it stopped in front of me, I kicked it hard right in the nose. It went runny away down the street back to where it came from yelping like a puppy.

Yes dogs noses are very sensitive, I remember seeing this defense on t.v. somewhere and it worked for me. I suppose if I ran away the dog would have chased me down and attacked me. If I would have ran I'm sure I would have a few more scars on my legs then I do today.

mace if you have any, otherwise show no fear which is hard to do,dogs do sence fear. a good punch in the nose will also send them scrambling. worst case scenerio would be to hit the high ground be it a car or a tree ...ect

Well I Nearly got mauled over through SEconds of survival this evening by a black german shepherd in the streets. it saw me from far away and started running wildly at me, i knew it was not friendly. and standing there to show him i'm not afraid would not change his plans i guessed. So i run for my life, then came the high streets, and within seconds i managed to cross quickly while cars passing, then the dog stopped after the horns started beeping at it but still was determined to chase me more. So i run again and thanking god i found a bus at a traffic light, who kindly opened the door for me and i was saved. if it weren't for the split seconds of cars passing, and the bus i don't think i would've survived much today :O
