Guns are for responsible adults only, the ones that have gone through Hunter Safety Courses etc. If a gun gets into the hands of the wrong person (i.e. a young child) and the child hurts or kills another person - the person that owns the gun should go to jail for a long, long time. No ifs, ands or buts about it. It is a gun owner's responsibility to secure all arms so that no one can access them.
If the child that took the gun is old enough to understand the he is going to kill someone if he pulls the trigger while the gun is pointed at someone else, then he should also go to jail for a very long time.
Neither of them should ever be allowed to own a firearm for the rest of their lives - if and when they get out of jail.
