Dwayne makes a valid point. The more sophisticated firearms became the population of the American Indian diminished. Look at the buffalo, repeater rifles nearly wiped them out.

The white man also over many centuries of alcohol consumption also reacted differently when drunk. The Indian's who were strangers to booze in their culture, reacted in a way the whites couldn't understand. That's why in several states TODAY it is still illegal to sell alcohol to a full fledged Indian.

It's theorized that somewhere between 50% and 90% of the Native population was wiped out by European disease. Some say possibly even possibly higher than 90%, personally I find 50% more believable. Who knows, I just know it's a tough story to palate.
Her tag is Amer. History..... Disease...
    Jenn

OK let me back my woderfully correct answer up... Eurasian diseases such as smallpox, influenza, bubonic plague and pneumonic plagues devastated the Native Americans who did not have immunity.
I am smarter than I spell.. LOL
I'm not exactly sure, but I know one reason, many of them were killed.
