It means that any soldier or military personnel who takes an unauthorized leave of absence of 30 days or less, is guilty of such as stated by the UCMJ. (Uniformed Code Of Military Justice).(A Misdemeanor) However after 30 days of becoming AWOL such service member shall be charged with the crime of Desertion. A crime punishable by death during times of war as determined by a Military Court Martial.
