That formula will differ with the size of the tank in mention. But, you can take the overall capacity of the tank and divide by two to see where you are in relation to its half way point and the amount of gallons determined by your calculations. Or, you can divide the overall capacity by four to help in determining how many gallons you have if you are nearer to the quarter of a tank point. On any tank, the designers of it usually figure in what is called outage (room for expansion of the fluid being contained), so you will usually only get a ballpark number. If you are using a rod or a long stick to drop down into it, the is a method called "sticking a tank," which many companies require a driver to do in order to compare against a meter giving gallon readings. It souds a little different from most peoples everyday experience, but it's not really that hard. Just make sure the rod touches the bottom of the tank if you are using that method. Somewhere on that tank there should be a tag, or plate with the overall capacity on it.

Volume of Cylindrical tank, in cubic feet = 0.785D2x H
A tank has a diameter of 10-feet and has 7-feet of water in it. How many cubic feet of water is in the tank?
V = 0.785 x 10-ft x 10-ft x 7-ft= 549.5 cu ft.
