This usually happens because of anovulatory cycles. When a woman begins to approach menopause or peri-menopause, she begins to not ovulate every cycle. When a woman does not ovulate, she doesn't produce progestereone. Progesterone is one of the main hormones that control how vascular the uterus becomes and when to start the mensus.
