Go to your local bakery and buy a cake box to fit your cake. When I owned my bakery, I often had requests for empty boxes. Most bakeries are happy to sell you a box, because they buy their boxes in quantities of 100 to a carton. You can also go to a cake decorating store and buy a single box, although they are usually expensive to buy that way.

Yes, for 15 years. I made cakes and desserts by special order, mostly wedding cakes. It was called The English Cakes and Desserts Company.
I planned to take a Wilton cake decorating course in my late 20's, but having a young child took priority. I regret not taking the course because we used to have so many get together's with friends.
CB that was exactly how I started my career. My son was going to turn 1 and I wanted to make a fancy cake for his birthday. I took the Wilton course and started making cakes for family and friends. Before I knew, I was making cakes for friends of friends and decided that I needed to do this on a larger scale, so I opened up my own bakery. I loved every minute of it. I still get calls from people requesting cakes and desserts. Closing the shop was a bitter-sweet decision (no pun intended).
CB: It's not too late, if you can find a course being offered somewhere! My community college had a floral arrangement/cake decorating class when I attended in the 70's. It was the most fun, and the investment has paid off many times over.
