A paralyzed dog lives at my vets office and it is a very happy dog. This dog has a two wheeled harness and is free to move around the building and when he is not strapped into this device he is able just to scoot himself across the floor using his front legs. It takes a whole lot of love and dedication to take care of a disabled dog. One thing you must be willing to do is clean up its behind when it pees and poos.

That I can agree to. A dog like that can still move around and check things and keep his mind occupied. I'm still trying to find out the extent of the paralysis of the dog mentioned here.
I just read the previous comments and I do agree with Colleen. If the dog is completley paralyzed then I doubt it will ever be happy not even if it receives the very best care.
This beautiful German Shepherd was paralyzed in his hind legs and he could walk around using his front legs . I had found this guy lying by a dumpster. And our pound here assure me that they could get him into a rescue unit for his type so I let them have him . Cause if they were going to euthanized him I wasnt going to leave him . But before we new it that is what they had done to him . They wouldn't let me have him back cause he wasnt my dog to start off with .But I was willing to get him his life to him. My moms dog was paralyzed in the hind legs and I work for 3 to 4 months putting them threw therapy and they was walking again and lived to be 19 years old.
Motley,I don't know if you are aware of this or not but the pound(animal shelter) and The Humane Society are 2 different types of facilities. The Dog pound/animal shelters main function is to get the animals off the streets and dispose of them as soon as possible. They are not pet advocates. On the other hand, the Humane Society are pet advocates. They will do anything possible to keep an animal alive and find a home for it. I used to volunteer for the HS and have seen cats with one eye,dogs with 3 legs and some with much worse injuries be placed in good homes. The HS will always get a TU from me, however, I would never trust or put the care of any of my animals in the hands of the dog pound/animal shelter.( I have heard that some animal shelters are no kill shelters and if this is true than my comments are not meant for them. But the one in my hometown performs euthanasia on thousands of cats and dogs a year.

That's a tough call. How paralyzed is he? What's his quality of life? Does he appear happy even with his paralysis?

I would need the link to go to facebook to see it. My answer would be the same though. Most importantly is his quality of life. I wouldn't know that without knowing him.
This still does not tell me the extent of his paralysis. If he was completely paralyzed, then I probably would have had him put down. That's no sort of life for a dog. Especially when dogs can't speak to tell you if they have a nasty itch that is driving them insane because they can't get to it.
D-a-n-g C-o-l-l-e-e-n, I got a TU for my original answer but Motely came back and gave me a TD for agreeing with you that a dog should probably be put down if it's completely paralyzed. I guess i'll have to be more selective about which of your answers I choose to agree with and comment. Tee- Hee- Hee...lmao.
Pfffft, I'll give you a TU. Some people just have a way of caring about their own selfish feelings than they do the one that's suffering. Paralysis means some form of suffering no matter how mild someone may think it is. I bet rmotley would bitch and feel sorry for him/her self if even one hand was paralyzed on his/her body. You have to live it to understand it. I still have no clue as to how paralyzed this dog was as rmotley never told me.

Then in reading your comments and saying you thought you could rehabilitate him, I don't understand why you turned him over to the shelter instead of keeping him and caring for him yourself. How long did you have him before you turned him over to know he was happy and not in pain?
I only had him for about an hour . But our shelter had told me when I went there that they could get him into a rescue unit. And I thought since she gave me 99.5 percent that she could then I thought it would be better for him even though I could have took care of him between my jobs that I have now. He was very loving and loved give me and my kids sugar's and he would follow us scoot his hind legs and I had picked him up off the road so I knew he was in no pain cause as he was a very big dog and I picked him up by myself and if he was in pain he would have biten me instead he gives me sugar's. But at the time my husband thought to that if the shelter was going to get him into a rescue unit that it would have been better for him but if they was going to put him asleep then no bring him home. But they had lied to me . And all because he was not my dog in the begin they refuse to let me have him back. but I have learn from this not to take another dog there. And i've been praying in hopes that God will let my numbers come up on the lottery and if it does , im going to build me a NO KILL SHELTER . That is my goal now. And I even have pictures of him . And I even posted them on facebook to .Thank you very much .
Dogs can withstand a lot more pain than people can. They can withstand it to the point that you would never know they were in pain. You picked him up off the road meaning he had been hit by a car. He was injured not paralyzed. He needed a vet, not people he could give sugars to. He probably had broken hips, legs or a fractured back along with internal bleeding (which would have killed him anyway). Did you try to find his owner during the hour you had an injured dog playing with your kids?? Why did you not take a dog who had been hit by a car to a vet instead of the pound? By the sounds of it, it's probably best they put him down. I bet he was suffering. You knew nothing about him other than the fact he could fight through his own pain to give something to you to make you happy. You are really beginning to sound like a selfish person who thinks only of her own needs and not the needs of others. Ugh....I can't talk to you anymore.
He was taking to the vet and they did xrays on him and there was no broken bones . And they ran more test and that is when they said he was paralyzed. Im not trying to sound selfish here . I just wanted to take him back home so I could give him therapy so he could walk again cause he was so strong and he had the will power in him . Yea he may of not been my dog but at least my heart was in the right place in helping him and not putting him down, like he was. Yea maybe your are right in me be selfish , but im selfish to myself cause Im always giving to others and not myself, that is the type of person I am .
Funny you choose now to mention he was taken to a vet. So, you paid the bill to have him checked out but still turned him over to the pound? OK.
No when they pound assure me that a rescue unit would take him , there the one who had him taking to the vet but it was the same vet that I use, that is how I knew some much about him now . And I had going to my vet when the dog was there and sit with him and ask question about him that is how I knew , but I had to go back to pound to see if they would return him back to me. But all because he wasnt my dog they refuse to give him back to me instead they put him down. We learn by mistakes and that is what this was a big mistake I should have took him there myself now and he would have been still with me. But I want to say thank you for talking to me about this .

Our mother had our dog put down. He was suffering and he was twenty years old. She could not bear to see him suffer any longer. He couldn't walk.

I assure you that your mother did the right thing for your dog now cause he or she had lived the life span now . But im talking about a dog that was around 2 years old now that didnt have a chance now . That is what is so sad now .There is a will there is a way that is my beleaf now.
