Travel to \Peru
I am going to Peru in four weeks with my two boys. I have never travelled in my life. I am not sure whether I should just take a little American money and have more of the local currency and the visa or what would be the best to carry for currency.

It is true you can use your visa in just about any country and yes you may have to pay a surcharge but the surcharge is shown on the ATM and if it is too high try another banks ATM. The ATM will have buttons for different language in most cases and the surcharge is shown and you have the choice to proceed or cancel.
I tend to prefer to take money out every few days so as not to have too much cash in case of theft OR temptation to over spend.
Have a woderful trip and come back feeling much better about yourself. I have read you story with sadness as no person deserves what you have had. Look for a new start for you and the boys and try being alone with them. There are more good men out there than bad but don`t go jumping out of the pan into the fire.
The sincere wishes of a old Aussie go with you. THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

I appreciate your answer in so many ways PEOPELOVER. I am actually doing quite well these days and don't feel in need of a man at this time. I have never used my visa in an ATM so all this wil be new to me but thats great advice as well. The less I have to use it, the less charges to my account. We are so excited, butterflies in the stomache almost overwhelm me...lol. Thanks so much...if I could reach out and cyber hug...I just did;)
Go easy mom, that cyber hug nearly squeezed the air out of my poor old lungs,
Have a chat to your bank about using your card, they should be happy to help you be confident in the use of same.
Please don`t think I am being rude, there are lots of ways to continue "not feeling the need of a man" as I am sure you know. Be patient and wait quietly.
May the butterflies in your stomach emerge as Blue Birds Of Happiness.

I carried my ATM card with me wherever I went overseas - the machines dispense in the local currency and some merchants won't take US Dollars. You can change to American Currency upon arrival back in the states at the Airports.

Okay Yvonne57...what is the charge on your card for exchanging with your ATM? Thanks for your advice as like I said this is our first trip.
Your bank will tell you what they charge PER TRANSACTION. Avoid frequent small withdrawals by pulling out as much as you're comfortable carrying on your person. Enjoy the Carapulcra.
Mom - you aren't exchanging money with the ATM you are just withdrawing whatever amount of money you need. Just like here. The fee depends on your bank. Make sure you check the exchange rate before you go and practice calculating in your head so you can shop "better".

In my opinion you should take alittle be of both. Just make sure to exchange back the peruvian money before leaving the country otherways you are going to have "monopoly money" here with you and won't know what to do with it. A small advice ... I don't know how old are your boys, but if they are small, please keep them very close to you at all times, trust me I am from South America.
