    Take a look at Colleen's answer.
    If the pulp (nerve) was dead the procedure would not be painful in any case. If the pulp was live, I don't see how anyone could withstand the pain, Buddhist or not.

    Yes, I did understand the joke acually.
    As a dentist ( retired) I still have an uncontrollable urge to answer dentally related questions.
    As a one-time TM practitioner I call myself a transcendental surgeon.
