It's going to take some time.........They have to find something to replace it, unless millions want to go without electricity? So until there is a major safety violation or threat of a meltdown, it won't be happening soon. I think the media is trying to sway public opinion against nuclear energy even more so since the Japan incident. Just as the B.P. oil rig explosion and leak in the gulf was used by the media......

The government has been looking at the designs for nuclear plants since the first one under the bleachers in Chicago back in 1943. The problem is not with the plants themselves, but where they were located and the backup systems and water pipes that ruptured or stopped working when the generators stopped working. While the plant design system has worked, it was the cooling systems that did not.
As for your second point about shutting down the plants here, the NRO is looking into the safety concerns here every second of every day and it seems likely that if the plants located along fault zones here have similar safety problems, they will be retrofitted after we see how the problems play out in Japan.
That being the case, it is likely that people will once again push for future plants not be built, just as they did after Three-mile-island happened last century. But the problem with that is that forces the old reactors to remain on line when they should have been replaced by newer and safer systems. So, do we want to bankrupt ourselves paying for gasoline, coal, and natural gas, or irradiate ourselves with nuclear storage issues? Wind generation kills birds and is an eyesore off shores where they could generate the most energy, microwave energy from space based satellites remain in trial stages, wave technology can only be used in specific places because of wild life issues, so what your suggestion to get that bag of frito's to your lazy boy chair?

Lets not forget NEVADAS good old Harry Reid's reluctance to open up YUCCA MOUNTAIN to all the NUKE WASTE these power plants are now storing.

Yea that fool Reid is still around. He is a worthless individual. He has a USA 4 Sale around his neck, but I think a rope would look better!
The Japanese Nuke plant that we're all watching blow up on our TVs the last few days was designed by US companies and we have numerous Nuke plants in THIS country with the exact design. Makes ya think that maybe we need to take a second look at how we can prevent the same thing from happening here.

tu on the question, nuclear energy is much safer in the U.S. then in many of the other countries. Don't know about the conspiracy theory part though.
