    What substance?
Particles in gas are well separated with no regular arrangement. liquid are close together with no regular arrangement. solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular arrangement.
EXAMPLE: snow and ice are solids: bring them into the house they become a liquid: heat the liquid they become a gas.

Particles and how they move determines how much change must take place before a substance can move between states of solid, liquid and gas.
solid for water 32F for solid Ice cubes above 32 becomes liquid boiling 240F and then becomes a gas.
Each liquid has a different freezing and different boiling point. with water adding salt will change it's solid, liquid and freezing point. Salt water will have a lower freezing point and so this will change the liquid stage and gases stages.
Try this: put two pans of equal amounts water on the stove. place salt in one and none in the other turn both on at the same x, temp and see which boils faster.
