    Favorite Italian Dish ?

Mamma mia, no fast-food here, please. If you were treated to a swanky Italian restaurant, what would you order ? Do you occasionally cook Italian ? What's your best creation ?

Linguini alle vongole. Linguini is my favorite pasta. Not a seafood fan, but I'm in the definite minority, I know. Can't possibly eat Italian without the vino, right ?
    daren1

Lasagna !Ultimate comfort food. Have you ever tried it with bechamel sauce ? To die for.
I can see why it was a big seller. The sausage is a nice touch. Was the clientele mostly "Italian" or non- ?

Italians are very proud people, not many of our customers were Italian as all the local Italians thought they had better at home. :) I'm sure some probably did but it was us that was in business, not them. we did have some that were regulars though. Never judge an Italian restaurant by the fact that there are Italian customers. They have way too much pride.. Funny thing is that our 'togo' orders were many times ironically Italians - So they did like it but was too proud to be seen there.. LOL

I agree, especially with older Italians. Growing up, we NEVER ate out.

Up here, anyway, young Italian descendents, especially young professionals eat out regularly and tend to patronize Italian restaurants. Nevertheless, the cuisine is truly universal and appeals to all nationalities.

I'm not very original. I like good, old fashioned spaghetti and meatballs. There was once an Italian restaurant here in Austin that cooked the best food but, it mysteriously closed down.

Can't go wrong with the classic al dente spaghetti.

We cook Italian in this house a lot.  We have  a store near by that specializes in gluten free products  and so I can eat it all.  I can't pick a favorite ... I am still cooking!

I want to move back up north now... I could get a good spinach calzone I would give you a kidney.... And eggplant parm... Such easy dishes but they do make me home sick... My friends were half italian and half Irish we were eating and drinking all the time..LOL

Italians are pretty good drinkers too. No good food down south ? Go north then, Jenn. Get your fix. You NEEEED it;-)

I was raised in the Italian restaurant business, My parents had many Sicilian/calabrese dishes. My most favorite was baked rigatoni with sausage and mushroom, this was a dish that consisted of rigatoni or mostaciolli maranera sauce with slices of Sicilian (fennel) sausage, mushroom in a casserole dish, with provolone or mozzarella cheese on top covered and baked until bubbling and the cheese melted on top, then sprinkled with Parmesan and chopped parsley..

This was a big seller.. We had many dishes but this one was my favorite. Sometimes we would also slice red and green bell peppers and bake that in as well (of asked for) Yummy! We had a very large restaurant, I closed it in 1984 to explore other things in life, many times i kick my own butt for selling it too, it was successful right up to the last day. (dumb kid)

It's amazing how different shaped pastas actually taste differently even though they're made of the exact same ingredient.

Yes, I only had this dish once, it was wonderful. I'm French/Scots so is the community, it's hard to find an Italian Restaurant around here.

Osso buco. Tender veal shank meat that breaks with a fork and dunking fresh crusty panini morsels in the bone marrow. Wash it down with a bottle of barolo and be happy you're alive.
    digger

Oooh. I haven't had osso buco in a long time. Not all restaurants list it on their menu but the good ones do; at least occasionally. Thanks for reminding me. I'm overdue.

I love an Italian beef sandwich with mozzarella cheese and some pepperoncini  peppers on the side

In a fresh crusty panino bun. I like stuffing my sandwich with lightly dressed radicchio. Oil and vinegar. Extra virgin olive oil, naturally.

The place where Italian food originated:  http://www.mondoitaly.com/     Does anyone know if there are "Olive Gardens" and Pizza Huts" in Italy?

The franchisors are smart enough to know that they wouldn't stand a chance in the "big leagues"

I'm surprised that you know the drink, Digger . All my freinds and workmates have never heard of it, i have been drinking it off and on since the late sixties, in Rome it is sold in small Fanta bottles.

Any pasta dish is fine by me.

I like my own lasagne better than most others...

    Ever use bechamel sauce ?
    Bob/PKB

Nothe yet, but I got a beautiful convection oven this morning, so I'm sure everything I make will be delicious from now on.

You people have managed in two minutes to get my stomach growling and mouth watering. THANKS. Now I have to decide where to go for lunch. Thanks to you Digger.

    Buon appetito amico mio.

Snooki is on the reality show "Jersey Shore". Very popular in USA.

    digger

    That explains my ignorance.

Snooki Polizzi (Chilean by birth," Italian" by adoption). Does that count?

    digger

Of course you qualify, but what the hell is Snooki Polizzi ?
