You should have been put under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) and then they couldn't have fired you - it is a Federal Law. Your company screwed you over. I have had COPD for a long time.
COPD is not a reason for disability. Get yourself to a Pulmonary Specialist and get put on inhalers - not only will you feel a lot better but you will be able to breath a lot better. Get back to work and it will put you in a better frame of mind.
