the torque converter provides a little slippage between engine speed and wheel speed when it is working right. if your dash board has a tach. to tell engine speed, you can watch how much faster the engine is going than the expected road speed when you accelerate. For each car it is a little different, but it should be fairly predictable for your car (200-400 RPMs.) If it is much more than normal it is because the inside bearings/bushings are loose and that produces blow by. It normally increases a small amount over a long time. Change fluid and add a transmission treatment for your type transmission to remedy this. The other fault is if leaks develop in some of the seals, and the bearings lock up. this will lug the engine and make it difficult to start or shift. For this the part has to be replaced. Sorry. Trans mission repair places sometimes replace the part that is functioning okay, 1. to hike up the bill, you don't know anyway, or 2to replace the bushings ($10+1/2 hr labor.) The torque converter lasts a lot longer than the rest of the trans. They are kinda expensive and at times the place charges for the new one with out actually doing anything but reinstalling the old one, how would you know? Sorry my skepticism of these places comes out. There are good places/guys but my trust is a little low.....
