Christians. Why does the Bible confuse the Unbeliever?

    God's Word explains this......

1Cr 2:1 ¶ And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
1Cr 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
1Cr 2:3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
1Cr 2:4 And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
1Cr 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

1Cr 2:6 ¶ Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
1Cr 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, [even] the hidden [wisdom], which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
1Cr 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known [it], they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
1Cr 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

1Cr 2:10 But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1Cr 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
1Cr 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
1Cr 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1Cr 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.
1Cr 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
1Cr 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

    God Bless!

From my experience we need the Holy Spirit to understand deeper spiritual truths, most non-Christians spend their life ignoring the voice of God, I know I did. God speaks in a still small voice and unless you're very tuned in, it is easy to miss what God is trying to tell us.

If I back slide just a little bit, it's much more difficult for me to hear God's quiet voice. I think sometimes he has to yell at us for us to hear Him. So the next time you see some beautiful scenery and you hear a quiet voice saying look at how beautiful this world is, or this animal is, remember that it may be God's voice you are hearing...

I hear what you are saying brother and I agree,

One thing the Holy Spirit will not do though is tell you something contrary to what is written in the Word of God. Some people believe in extrabiblical things that are contrary to God's word. THey then pick and choose which ones they will believe.

Absolutely, I have run across many of these off the main stream type Christians with their far out translations of specific verses, the ones that believe that Satan is Jesus' brother. There are some people who are way out there.

That's a great point, the H.S. will always support the word and if that voice isn't, than it's not of God. I don't understand how so many Christians can get so far off base. If you study the word you won't be led astray by others.
I don't think it's The Bible. It may be lack of knowledge of spiritual truth.
Here's another thing to think about related to the question.

"Why do some people feel like they are being judged when they read a Bible verse, in a question on this or any other site?"

    Hebrews 4:12 (HCSB)
12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)
12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NASB)
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NASB77)
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NRSV)
12 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (YLT)
    12 for the reckoning of God is living, and working, and sharp above every two-edged sword, and piercing unto the dividing asunder both of soul and spirit, of joints also and marrow, and a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart;

That was good to read. Thanks

n.prob., I like to read all the different versions of the Bible to get a better understanding of the meaning.
Before I became a believer I did'nt read the Bible. The first time I read it the message from God was very clear. I was not confused and knew exactly what I needed to do. That was 30 years ago.
    leeroy

It's inconceivable to most people and when I was a young Christian, that while reading the Bible you actually are getting a deeper spiritual meaning. The first time it happened to me God was warning me and it freaked me out.

He really spoke to me in a language that is purely spiritual, and it's incredibly difficult to explain to a secular person.

If that doesn't convince us how real God actually is, I don't know what will. It's almost frightening when you hear God's voice clearly for the first time, even when you go to church and it seems like the message is directed at what's going on in your life. God is a very, very, personal God...
    friendindeed

Your right. The words in the Bible are not just words. They are living words.
    FriendofGod

    Greetings Friendindeed,

    Good point!

Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. This is the gospel message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If one does not answer the call of conviction by the Holy Spirit on this, one has no chance of understanding any other scriptures. They will only see confusion, errors and contradictions.

    God Bless!
If the bible is not a literal missive then what does Paul mean by saying this....

2Ti 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
    Benthere

    A simpleton's view:

    (2Ti 3:16) God's word/influence can stand all tests
(2Ti 3:17) Man has to follow God' will; man can not have good words only. Good works, serving God and helping others, must accompany the words.
I have seen plain language bibles that were attempts too make since of the book to folk who may have dodged theologians. The language of the bible is a bit odd to folk who don't study it often and its a quick read. I dislike digging out meaning, interpreting and comparative summaries. Many folks parrot a phrase to answer a question and treat folk to questions like "What does that mean to you?" You hear that and that little voice inside seems to wince and say something like( "they think you are going to hell.") To which they respond..."Get off the lawn! Get off the property and I don't want to talk to you!"

I don't understand why folks study the bible every day of their lives and talk bible to anyone they get near. It's not that complex unless you are into mix and match to attempt to make a cross word puzzle out of the bible. Much to my surprise, my Dad, a Baptist preacher, got into numerology. I thought that was akin to astrology, witchcraft and voodoo. He had taken biblical verses about dooms day and woven that into some weird riddle that had pegged Richard Nixon as the devil. How strange is that? I showed him how any name could be rewritten into anything else via codes and ciphers, but he didn't understand that.

We have a history in which less than 5% of the population could read, not so long ago. Those who did not know how to read considered people who could read with suspicion and distrust. The preacher could read and all those nice words couldn't save them from looking under ******** skirt. The book and the presenter are "Type Cast" together in the mind of folk outside the church. You may as well wear a uniform, with all those pins, rings, slick looks and leather bound book...a few steps away from a gun for all those sinners. Parroting Bible phrases in answer to every question makes you look too dangerous to be around. In other words, bible thumpers frighten many people who you consider " the Unbeliever".

    FriendofGod

    Greetings Robert,

Sorry to hear about your dad going astray.

Really Robert, the bible is not a mystery in need of special sent from God interpreters. The NT is written for common folk and reads just as any other letter one might receive from a friend. It is plain and simple. It explains who Jesus is and how He came and died for the sins of the world. It explains how to follow Him and submit your life to God, NOT ANY MAN (ie, a preacher).

Read the NT bible and let it be between you and God. Then you might understand the Christian pov.
The Bible may confuse some. One thing I know. I get confused when I read that we all came from nothing. Our brain was designed by nothing. In order to make another one of us we need male and female should it be human, animal or plant. Now that is confusing.
F.O.G.....On the night I became a Christian I was reading a book written by other Christians and at the time it was not helping. I felt God nudging me to open a little bible which was given to me 10 years before by a Christian. I had it in my bedside drawer for 10 years. I opened it and the words from God made all the differance. That night my new life started.

    AMEN brother!

I myself had some misguided opinions concerning God until a friend challenged me and I decided to actually read the gospels for myself. My intention was to read them and then go back to my friend and tell him how wrong he was. But after reading through Matthew, then Mark, then Luke, I hit John and the Holy Spirit hit me!

I called up my friend and thanked him for his witnessing to me and we prayed together and cried together as the H.S. began His work of washing me clean!

I have been told many times, and by christians, to stop the bible quoting and just "show" them the love of Jesus. But God's word is clear, the Word must be heard. It is God's word that is quick and penetrating. Those who oppose God hate to hear it and some Christians are misguided about not preaching it.

Faith cometh by HEARING. The SHOWING comes from truly believing.

    God Bless!
    Let's look at some examples.

Jhn 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Jhn 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Jhn 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Is this a literal missive? If not, then explain.
it confuses me and im a beleiver.. but thats were faith comes into play. ther are no contridictions in the bible just in the interpitations
well, for one thing, there are so many different paraphrases of the Bible. Yes, I said paraphrases. Because most of these modern '' translations '' are not translastions at all. They leave out meaning words, and rephrase the words of the original authors . The best and truest bible is the King James Version. But after that is the Revised Standard Version
