    A gain of 5 to 10 pounds is normal. (2.3 - 4.6 kg)

The act of smoking increases a person's metabolic rate by forcing the heart to beat faster. When a cigarette is inhaled, the smoker's heart may beat 10 to 20 times more per minute for a period of time.

When this rate decreases so does the consumption of calories.

In any case as a sufferer of copd, any of the risks a small weight are not to be compared to the benefits os stopping the tobacco!
the best way to replace a bad habit is with a good habit, more easily said than done though
I know of several people who have given up smoking and their weight gain was tremendous, some over 60 lbs over a period of about 5 years. They occasionally ask me to stop smoking because of concern for my health. My response is always an in your face "you really think your healthier than I carrying all that extra weight"? The conversation stops and we talk about the weather.
About 10 lbs plus or minus. I eventually lost the ten pounds about six years after I quit smoking. It was tough! Good luck, I have COPD also.
