Why is it acceptable to make nasty comments about overweight people?

While at the beach today, 3-young men (maybe in their early 20s) were making rude comments and laughing at a large women in a two-piece. It is not acceptable to make comments regarding race or religion or other personal attributes but it seems fine to make nasty comments about overweight people.

    Why?

only those whose own life is miserable make nasty or fun of others!!!
    Who said it was acceptable???
Some have to be on medication which makes them gain weight. I know some who are. They cannot lose weight in the regular way either. Metabolism is also a factor. "Plump" people are not usually lazy, dirty, or careless. One should never criticize another till they have walked in their shoes!

    I totally agree
I usually carry a weapon with me and they only make comments once,
It's only acceptable if you sit there listening and don't say anything to the ones making rude comments. Otherwise by societies standards, it's not acceptable. By the freedom of speech clause, it is unfortunately. And yes, you can still make comments about the rest you mentioned but you can not say things about them that incite crime or violence against them.
to some "happyness is conteplating the misery of others' while in reality it's the ones that hurl the insults that are miserable and shallower than most puddels

    i hundred percent agree :)
It's not.Never met an overweight person who didn't have a great sense of humor.
It is not acceptable. Everyone is a racist, critic, or hater in some way. It is okay to be your own being, but the problem occurs when you speak it loud. The common sense should be dominant on our behaviors.
It isn't acceptable. There are many reasons why people are overweight and nobody has any idea, or any right to know, why a person is overweight.

I find the sight of people who are overweight offensive if they are eating at the time and littering the streets with wrappings. I would never make any comment about their weight, though I would about the litter.

And I guess you find it acceptable when a wealthy or skinny person does the same thing, you've just described a slob, and they come in all sizes, gender and colors.

True I detest litter & often pick it up if the offender isn't around. Litter seems to beget litter
    No its not acceptable
IT SHOULDN'T BE ACCEPTABLE TO MAKE NEGITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT ANYONE.
NO ONE ON EARTH IS PERFECT.
I have fat friends , i love them. weight, gender, religion, race, homosexuality does not matter in my group of friends, we love each other, it's what makes a us all special :)
This may be beyond some of you but Sophie Tucker once said Nobody loves a fat girl but oh how a fat girl can love. Think about it next time you have something ugly to say about a fat woman
Generally, they are not healthy ; and that makew people be afraid o f them. And they are not functional ; and that makes people be bored of them
