What Are The Top 10 Scariest Movies Of All Time?

My list would include, in no particular order, The Exorcist, Psycho, Jaws, Alien, The Birds, The Omen (original), The Thing (original - but I like the remake too), The Grudge, The Shining, and Silence Of The Lambs. There are others I could name, but these are the ones that come immediately to mind. What are your favorites?

Did you ever see the movie "Manhunter"? It was the first film to feature the character Hannibal Lecter but he was played by Brian Cox. He was as creepy to me as Anthony Hopkins. Scary dude man.

Excorcist for sure,I still cant watch that movie by myself. So utterly terrifying!

    My #1 choice.

The Exorcist book was very good and will help you to understand some things that you may not have noticed in the film.

My first choice, as well. It's not just "ghostly" or "maniacal", it's supernatural evil at it's worst! How do you deal with THAT??
Actually, Poltergeist was pretty good, too.

When I was a kid, my parents dropped me off at the movie matinee. I saw 'X-the unknown' That movie scared the hell outta me, I couldn't sleep for nights! I saw that move about a years ago, by today's standards, walt disney makes scarier ones but it made such a dent in my mind that even now it sends shivers up my spine..

I know what you mean. When I was A kid I saw Mr. Sardonicus and it scared me. I had nightmares where I kept seeing that joker-like face. But now it doesn't bother me at all.

    The Exorcist.....Amityville Horror........Blair Witch........Silence of the lambs......psycho.........

I've heard it was a analogy of people in the U.S. becoming communists, but It freaked me the heck out when I was a kid.

I can think of a few
    1.Shadow of a doubt
    2.Psycho
    3.the birds
4.night of the living dead 1968 remake 1990
    5.resident evil 1-4
    6.poltergeist 1982
    7.alien-aliens
    8.the thing 1951
    9.the blob 1958
10.invasion of the body snatchers 1955

I saw "Halloween" on the big screen in college when it first came out...holy crap...literally!

    Ms Sinclair

Hmmmm. Sorry but I was never really impressed with that one. I hate when they have people acting in ways that no person in their right mind would act. Why does Jamie Lee Curtis go into her neighbor's house when she sees a strange man prowling about? Why not just call the police? And I thought it was silly the way they, at first, lead you to believe that Michael was a human psychopath, only to reveal later on that he was some kind of invincible creature.

The Exorcist will go down in history as being the scariest movie of all time. Back in the 70s, people were not ready to experience the advances of movie magic that they are today. So, when they heard the sound and saw the images; people flocked to the churches to become saved. yes, this movie produced an influx of church-goers.

I saw Exorcist as a comedy rather than scary. :) The Damian movies i think were scarier.
The Saw movies for sure not because of the gory scenes and blood drenched rooms but because some psycho out there might watch this movies and find it really entertaining to do the same.I mean you never know when a creep might be stalking you just waiting to torture you.

Another real scary movie is Hostel because even though it doesn't say it's based on a true it actually is. Many similar "incidents" have have occurred in Europe.
1st night of the living dead

The Shining, The  ( original) House on Haunted Hill .   ,  The Tingler ,  The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, The Godfather.

Fatal Attraction scared me...and apparently everyone else in the theatre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8vWU-6Br0c

    mycatsmom

It scared my brother too. He went to see it with his wife and some other people . And when he came out of the theater, he said , " I'm NEVER going to cheat on my wife " ha ha ha
    Clonge

So did a lot of other husbands (lol)! I think that the movie should be re-released.

The movie 'the Arrival'.. When I see the aliens walking and running around with legs backwards, like a goat legs, I find that creepy.

the original wicker man with Edward Woodward, found it very disturbing,im 50 this year but still couldnt comfortably watch it.Loved the old Hammer horrors, especially Boris Karloff as Frankensteins monster but always felt so sorry for the character.Id have liked to have adopted him!!!

nightmare on elm street (all 5 of them) halloween(1&2) the haunting in conneticut and friday the 13th (old version and new version) the poltergeist movies might be a close contender
    Ms Sinclair

I almost included Nightmare On Elm St. on my list. Those films are scary.
