Some "men" are just habitual liars - just as with some women. But, to get to the root of your question - it is often because women don't really want the truth and literally enjoy and crave being lied to. Many of them want to feel good or content than face a possibly ugly truth (guys do this to, but generally to a lessor degree.
Just try and answer a lot of their questions truthfully and see what happens...
Do these pants make my ass look fat? (no, your ass makes your ass look big), "Do you love me?" "You wouldn't cheat on me, would you?" - and thousands of others... Get the picture? Do you REALLY want to know, or are you just trying to make up for some insecurity and make yourself feel better - no matter how temporary, fleeting, or blatantly false...
Lie to me, please! Flattery (and telling people what they want to hear) will get you everywhere - unfortunately.
Or, I could just tell you that men are dogs, lying pigs, good for nuthin', and have and will always be that way. Women are just the innocent victims and are always getting the short end of the stick. There, feel better now?
Maybe we should re-phrase the question to "Why do women lie to themselves, and believe it?" Or, "Why am I asking an overly generalized and sexist (it works both ways) question in the first place? Why do I put up with such behavior, and why does it keep happening to me?" Careful of the answer, because you may not like it, it may make you FEEL bad, and may be the (ugly) truth. It always takes two to tango, and the only thing in life you have any possible control of is yourself - and that is usually a stretch in itself.
Embrace the truth and don't take anything less, but always start with yourself. Truth has no agenda.
