I do not believe there is a real benefit of sliding into 1st head first due to the fact that the play is a force, not a tag. However, some believe that their is a perception that the runner would beat the ball on a close play.
I do not subscribe to this theory, however running through 1st base properly (not stopping the sprint until about 2 feet past the bag) would present the same perception in my opinion.
In addition, after sprinting 2 feet past the bag, the runner should break down closing the distance between himself and 2nd base. The runner should then look over his right shoulder for the ball (in case of an over throw).
