students are not held to a high enough standard. Too much money is wasted on special needs students especially when it is in fact glorified baby sitting in some instances. Parents must take the time to teach the basics (social and academic) to their children. Parents are the best teachers. If you are including the gifted in special ed...no need to. They challenge themselves.

Look at where the U.S. schools are rated compared to the rest of the world.

(AP) The United States is losing ground in education, as peers across the globe zoom by with bigger gains in student achievement and school graduations, a study shows.

Among adults age 25 to 34, the U.S. is ninth among industrialized nations in the share of its population that has at least a high school degree. In the same age group, the United States ranks seventh, with Belgium, in the share of people who hold a college degree.

By both measures, the United States was first in the world as recently as 20 years ago, said Barry McGaw, director of education for the Paris-based Organization for Cooperation and Development. The 30-nation organization develops the yearly rankings as a way for countries to evaluate their education systems and determine whether to change their policies.

McGaw said that the United States remains atop the "knowledge economy," one that uses information to produce economic benefits. But, he said, "education's contribution to that economy is weakening, and you ought to be worrying."

The report bases its conclusions about achievement mainly on international test scores released last December. They show that compared with their peers in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, 15-year-olds in the United States are below average in applying math skills to real-life tasks.

Top performers included Finland, Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada and Belgium.

Apparently the quality of today's teachers leaves something to be desired. Look at how many stupid young people are out there. I don't mean to be insulting, but when you ask a freshman in high school where is Italy on the map and they don't have a clue, what other word than stupid applies.

Currently it sucks. Some teachers are incompetent and some just can't get through to the students. And some parents are at fault too because they are not strict enough with their kids doing their homework. The kids are too busy on the cell phones or video games.

Yep, Leeroy is correct about Australia going the way of America. Many Anglos-Saxons, are now attending private schools. Private schools have better teachers. The public schools are full of foreign students. You can play spot the Anglo in public schools.

When I went to school I had trouble learning English and math when I needed with them they ignored me or yelled at so I stopped asking for help
and I hardly learned ENGLISH or math not all teacher act like that just a few back the system seemed it didn't care if students could not read or write etc many could not even read their diplomas a crying shame this leave no child behind is a sad joke I hope it gets better

Take the worlds best JOKE an use the scale #1 being the lowest an #10 being the highest. Now the joke is a #1 an the educational would be a #10, because when alot of us went to school you learned or you didn't pass, now days you don't need to learn or even go to class an you still pass.
