Polycythemia is a condition in which a person has to many red blood cells. This condition may be temporary and can occur at high altitude as the body tries to compensate for low oxygen levels in the air. It may also occur as a serious disease. An increase in the # of rbc's can thicken the blood and form clots. This condition can be treated by a process called bloodletting. This is the same procedure that is done when a person donates blood but this blood is thrown out instead of given to other patients. You must have regular bloodletting to stay healthy.
