It's in your best interest to see a podiatrist and have a culture done to find out why your nails are abnormally thick.
Your toenails can thicken for many reasons. These include an injury; skin conditions, such as psoriasis; tight or poorly fitting shoes; and fungal infections.
Among these, a fungal nail infection — onychomycosis (on-i-ko-mi-KO-sis) — is the most common cause of thickened toenails.

There are clippers made heavier and sort of a different way just for that purpose. I know I had to get some for my Mom before she passed away. I got them at Wal-Mart. Also I do not know if it is hereditery or just as we get older or some kind of deficiency, but I have that same problem too. And I have tried the prescriptions for that and it did not work plus did not like the long list of adverse reactions.
