How toxic are the fumes from newly laid asphalt?

Is it toxic enough to cause people with lung damage to make it harder for them to breathe these fumes? Are the fumes toxic to exotic birds like parrots and cockatoos?

Over a half-million workers are exposed to fumes from asphalt, a petroleum product used extensively in road paving, roofing, siding, and concrete work. Health effects from exposure to asphalt fumes include headache, skin rash, sensitization, fatigue, reduced appetite, throat and eye irritation, cough, and skin cancer.

smoking a cigeratte is 10 times worse. my family owned and operated a paving company for over 40 years . never have i or any one thats worked with us ever experienced the problems that ninnet listed
I find this strange. When I was a kid, (a long time ago, )parents with kids who had chest problems, used to take them to places where they were laying tar-mac, and encourage them to inhale deeply. The theory was that it would "clear your tubes". Oh the inosence of the old days.

I do not believe asphalt fumes are harmful to birds, but I do know for a fact that seal coat fumes (Used to recoat asphalt driveways, etc) are toxic to birds, and humans.

Thats info about seal coat.. So, if someone is seal coating your driveway, do not take your bird outside. I have a little backpack like cage for my bird. It's really soft and he loves it so much. I wanted to take him for a walk today, but they are seal coating our apartment complex's driveways and roads. :( He loves going for walks in the summer because he is a tropical bird, and its always chilly in my apartment. I have a black capped caique. South American birdie :P .. if you are concerned about your birds health, contact a vet, or just use google ^_^

I know there are huge fines for dumping it illegally, that means that it is terrible for the environment. Yet we keep using it to make more roads...

I'm sure it cant be good for birds their lungs are delicate, and much different than human lungs. Research birds lungs and let us know what you find. Good luck...
