How do we seat estranged(i.e. to us) family members at our son's wedding reception?

Actually, grooms mum, you shouldn't be doing this at all, unless you are paying for the reception for some reason.

Seating arrangements are down to the bride and her parents.

A quiet word with the mother of the bride? The last thing she will want is a strained atmosphere.
Seat them correctly and be polite.

If that isn't possible, opt for a casual arrangement of the tables and mix both sides of the family, carefully :-)

If nothing else the second option would allow people who didn't know each other, or not well, to meet.

It the tradional "top table" MUST include people you'd rather it didn't have a long tzble with everyone facing one way and try to make sure everyone has at least one person they are happy to talk to beside them.

Persuade anyone making speeches to keep them short... and restrict the number of courses to shorten the time the meal lasts.

The same way you seat everyone else, with dignity and respect. It is no place to make a scene.
