Hearing about the loss of Burt Reynolds last night brought back a flood of memories.
I was 12 when Smokey & The Bandit was released. My friend from school was spending the weekend at my house and we had plans to go together to watch the movie. There was a tall reservoir wall in a field behind our house. Patty and I decided to climb the hill which was smooth and covered in grass on our side, but the opposite side was supported with rocks and boulders. We had the bright idea to climb down the rocky side. I took a few steps, lost my balance and tumbled several feet down the rock wall. I had gashes, scrapes, cuts and bruises from my head to my toes and I could hardly walk. We sneaked back inside the house and I cleaned up and changed into jeans and a long-sleeved shirt because I was afraid to tell my grandparents what had happened because I knew they would have taken me to the emergency room and I would have missed out on seeing Smokey & The Bandit. LOL
My aunt used to tell people she wanted George Burns to be her grandfather and Burt Reynolds to be her dad. She married a man a couple years later who drove a Trans Am just like the one in the movie. My new uncle was from a small Texas town and I moved in with the two of them when I was 16 years old. On a few occasions, I was allowed to drive his car to school. Boy, did I feel special! :))
I thought Burt Reynolds was so handsome during the 70's and my dad had a bit of a Burt Reynolds look about him too.
I've read that one of Burt Reynolds biggest regrets was turning down the role of James Bond.
I think he would have made an awesome 007.
RIP Burt Reynolds. I'm going to miss you.
