Liberal though I am, I think the tearing down of statues is stupid. They represent far more then slavery and God awful treatment. They represent an era enfluencing the course of history. These men made a mark in US history. The people of color that I happen to know have been far more secure then to be intimidated by brass. I cried at the holocaust memorial, so powerful and beyond sad, should we tear it down, too?

The people of Charlottsvile made a decision. David Duke was there. ... nice.
I have no friends that want to cross over the boarder right now. That sentiment began when your man in charge was voted in.
More to the point. I live in the inner city. I have homeless people living behind my house and sometimes in my own yard. I stick up for every beaten person because I have seen first hand how difficult race, addiction and learning disabilities can be. I am the person who helps every day without pay. Heather was the same kind of person. Those people who began this protest carried Tiki torches on Friday night and were chanting horrible racial slogans. I would have been out there as well standing up for what is correct. I will always stand up against racism and I will always work for the down trodden. You Julie, were one of the people I stand up for every day... at a point in your life. It's people like me that helped you and still do.
Americans would like to move on in spite of their president at this moment. Every country has history that needs to be placed in museums... mine included. Working hard to correct past mistakes is vitally important. And, that is being a responsible patriotic citizen.
I am still going to work hard. Sitting on a computer with opinions instead of actually doing something is mind numbing. There also is a thing that is magnificently important.... facts. True hard facts.
Please Terry stick up for your people. No man woman or child should be a slave because of the colour of their skin. In Canada we know in our hearts that we did something wrong. Let America own their 'wrong' as well. That is what last weekend was about.

The statue of Robert E Lee was on it's way to a museum. Heather Heyer died. This is a serious subject. In most civil countries we do not walk around with Tiki tourches because that symbol invokes horrible thoughts.
We have a great community friend who died last year because he left his cell phone in his truck. He walked back to his truck only to discover that someone was stealing the cell phone. The thief killed this dear man with a vehicle. Smashed him to death over a cell phone. (It's true. ... not making it up)
That monument is part of American history. An embarrassing and unfortunate part of American history. Like the Holocaust Museum in Berlin, these reminders of how people thought and the things they did should be placed where we, as human beings, can view, read about and completely understand where some of our thinking patterns came from.
Now, one lovely woman is dead and the rest of us get to think about it. The statue... I doubt very seriously that anyone with a thinking mind ever wants to see again.
