Stupid bank policy: I have a credit card with a major bank and no other accounts with this bank. I always pay off my

statement balance at the bank; never more than $500. I pay in cash, not that the amount matters. Every time, no matter what branch I'm at, the teller insists that I write down my ssn, telephone no. and occupation. After they're done, they give it back to me; they keep no records of them. I finally got tired of it, and the last several times I indicated that my occupation was "gigolo". Only one teller asked me what it was and I said that I "mooch off of women". No repercussions  ever resulted. Does your bank, or do your banks, have any stupid policy or policies?

Nope, my bank is quite sensible and mature.

    ....service charges

The banks here ask for photo I.D. in some circumstances. They don't need to ask for a Social Insurance Number because all banks and credit unions here, have had them on file for decades. The privacy laws are making things more secure but also creating havoc for some institutions such as banks, health care facilities, pharmacies, etc.

    I am with you Quacker>>>>>>>><<<<<<<..

Well the bank  I use knows me when I walk in and I've never  had a problem with any transactions so I guess I'm lucky! So much these days are direct deposit that I rarely go there

I like my credit union. Been there for 30+ years. My account number is only 5 digits long. When reciting it they always look expecting more when I finish my account ID.....

No problems at my bank at all. Your bank has no right to demand your SS#. It really shouldn't matter one bit who pays the bill.

When I opened my credit card account, I had to give them my ssn. I guess that's standard procedure in trying to obtain any credit card. Also, since the rise of terrorism, they and the government have gotten nosier.

It's the same hassle here, if a person wants to deposit money in someone else's account. Makes no sense to me. Why can't I give someone a gift through their bank account? I could not get a logical answer.

By law, in the US, you have only a few occasions where your SS# is required. Making a payment is NOT one of them. Look it up, Clonge. I'm using my phone and can't copy and paste the info for you here.
When I deposit cash to my son's account, of which I am not a co-owner, all I need is the account number. Who I am doesn't matter at all.
Clonge, your ATM could be connected to your credit card if you got it through your bank. You could make your payment at the ATM machine, just rounding up your payment to the next dollar.

Phyllis: I don't have an ATM card. Next time I make a payment, I will refuse to give them my ssn and see what happens.

Make a scene, if necessary. Demand to know by what law they are using to demand this info.

Banks in Aussie are getting worse as time goes on,some of it is in the name of privacy and security, and some of it is in the name of technology and stupidity..and common sense goes out the window..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

All the banks are horrible. My bank doesn't ask me for my sosh # or anything. If I try to get some 5s and 10s, the say to swipe my debit card.

That would be stupid advice here, where only $20 bills are dispensed from ATMs
