Would you spend alot of money on a car to fix it and hopefully make it last for awhile , $8,000 , or buy another ?

Well we decided to spend the 8,000 and get rebuilt motor with lifetime parts and warranty, transmission with warranty, front end suspension parts, tires, just to keep for awhile. I go to Oreilly Autoparts because they have lifetime warranty on their parts. Good thing , because alternator failed two times. Motor has 36 month/ 100,000 mile warranty, transmission has 60 month/ 100,000 mile warranty. Where would you get a warranty on a vehicle for 8,000 dollars the money I spent to refresh a vehicle. Did it to drive for another 5 years or longer. Did all this back in 2013. Well, it was worth it, to me. Its a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. It had 150,000 miles on it in 2013 when did all the work. Still going on at 209,000 miles .

    ....new car

Did you do the work, or was labor included in the price. Personally I would have bought a newer vehicle, but seems you did good.

I did not do any of the work.

We own a 2001  F350 crew cab dually. There's no way I can afford to replace it, not with new ones hitting $60-70,000 US dollars. We'll try to keep her going for a long time.

    Diesel ?

    Yes 7.3 diesel

That's what is in my van. Mechanics say that is most reliable engine around. Mine is just breaking in at 175,000 miles. Econoline 350 conversion van.

Ya that is a good engine. To bad they felt the need to start messing with it the 6.0 after the 7.3 was terrible.

Compared to the cost of a new car I think you made the right decision.I recently spent $3000 on a re-spray & another $2000 on the engine of our Toyota mini bus.The reason was that it was such a brilliant vehicle & just needed a sparkle up.

Depending on how much you thought of the vehicle i guess,,i once rebuilt a 1980 holden Jackaroo diesel,,and put a new 2 pack paint job on it,,It looked a lot like this one,but it was a Holden with a 2.4 Isuzu donk ..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<.. Image result for maroon 1980 jackaroo photos

Aw, Z. You must have been really attached to the original car. May I gather that the interior was cherry? How old was the car? If it was already paid for and driven a while after, why not sell it  (the interior alone should bring a pretty penny) and buy a shiny new one with all the bells and whistles? I'm so glad you're getting your money's worth out of the original......

My wife inherited it when they passed away several years ago. So didn't cost much. I am not one to buy a new expensive vehicle. Just needs to be dependable. That it is. Pretty good shape, if I could just keep her from damaging the rear bumper. She is left handed. The more bells and whistles there are , the more to break down.

It would depend on how much life it extends to the vehicle. $8000 would go a long way towards a replacement that may serve you better in the long run.

I thought of that as well. Just wanted to get about 5 years out of it. Been 3.5 so far. Cheap to insure too.

I know you've done the math and studied every angle, but $8000 for 18 months doesn't sound like a deal to me.
Of course, I'd have nearly half my choice for a new vehicle paid off with $8000. Insurance, like you said, is a consideration.

The main thing is what kind of vehicle will I get for 8000 like I already have. Not much. Some parts have a warranty. Can I buy a vehicle with low miles on engine - transmission for 8000. No.

Getting what you want, a major consideration.

    Yes , want and need..
