The occasion was the European Football Championship 22 June 2016. The last two matches in the group phase were being played out simultaneously and televised on separate channels. I chose to watch Italy v the Republic of Ireland, not least because it involved our closest neighbour who were the clear underdogs and regarded by some as fodder for the Italians.
It was a match in which the Irish had to win if they were to progress into the knock-out phase of the competition, something they had never achieved before. I couldn’t help but admire the tremendous 'never say die' fighting spirit they showed, and the goal they scored in the 85th minute to win for them a match they so richly deserved. A great sporting moment for Ireland. Yes, I had to fight back the tears.

My church sings the Lord's Prayer in Armenian (Hyer Mer). I miss the congregation praying together this prayer, in English. At the church office two weeks ago, I mentioned this to our interim pastor. The very next Sunday, Pastor Lou wove a congregational Lord's Prayer into the worship service. I could barely speak, with a lump of emotion in my throat (and tears of joy in my eyes).

Every spring our local hockey team acknowledges our young players who are now graduating to their dream jobs, in the National Hockey League (NHL). After watching them play and work hard for up to four years, it is touching to see them rewarded, as most of them cannot make it to the next level. It is a moment of pride and sadness (saying goodbye) and many of us, myself included, are fighting back the tears.
