    Obligations

What, if anything, are you actually OBLIGATED to do (aside from paying taxes, trying to obey the law kinds of answers) that you find objectionable?  Are there any you enjoy?

I obligate myself to be a good example to my sons and their families.  Sometimes I don't want to be the good example!  Sometimes I just want to throw caution to the wind, and hope the wind is blowing in the opposite direction!

Yesterday my daughter made a substantial payment on an upcoming obligation I had. She is always doing things such as this just because she is a very giving person (and can afford it). I am obligated to be grateful and thankful, but would rather tell her to stop showering me with gifts as it makes me feel I need to reciprocate in kind.

As long as she can afford it, why else do we raise them?
You obviously did a good job.

That is a very kind gesture on her part, and may be the way she shows her gratitude and love to you! Thank her, and reciprocate in the way best suited to you, not your wallet.

It was the second half payment for a vacation rental house there in Orange county as we will be there for her wedding. Maybe they'll just get a nicer wedding gift.

    A gift that keeps giving.

Knowing you will be there is actually better than anything stuffed into a box.

    Do you relate? Obligations!

Lots of people in that boat, sadly.

The only obligation that I find objectionable (more accurately uncomfortable) is to socialize with people with whom I have nothing in common. I'm not very good at small talk. I refer to it as "talking about nothing" and I don't like it.

I might mention something about our local businesses....they know nothing about it. I might mention something about hockey or golf....they know nothing about it. I might mention something about taking courses at our senior center or happenings at city hall....they know nothing about it. I might mention something about reading, working out, eating healthy, walking, doing volunteer work....ditto! (Okay, I give up. I want to go now.)       lol

Thankfully, I have to spend time with this group only on a rare occasion now. I'm too old to be straining myself. :)
