It's now 40 years since seat belt legislation was introduced here.I can't believe that some people are still crowing about it.In the beginning it was a nuisance but now it has just become automatic. You hop in the car,you swing the belt over your shoulder. Seat belts have advanced dramatically over the years as well. They are a lot more comfortable these days.I hope the legislatore in Maine have the sense to put the proposal where it belongs. In the trash.

It seems to me insurance companies may want to chime in on this. I believe seat belts save more lives than they injure and feel a person is putting himself at risk to opt out of buckling up. If one is in an accident and NOT wearing a seat belt, the insurance company may refuse to cover the medical costs. If the other party isn't wearing a seat belt, he should not be entitled to compensation for injuries. Just my opinion. If you are supposed to wear the belt and don't, you forfeit the benefits of insurance.

It was almost 20 years ago that I witnessed a big ol Chevy 4 wheeler pulled right out in front of a small Chevy chevette, Never had time to hit the brakes, told me he was running close to 60 MPH,, It popped the truck up in the air bout 4 feet and came to rest in a big ditch. The chevette made a hard left and almost hit me head on. I really expected the man in the chevette to be dead or at the least in pretty serious condition. He was out and walking in a few minutes thanks to a seatbelt....A few months later I watched a car hit the back of another car probably doing 30 MPH If that, This guy got out but,,, his head was busted open by the windshield, His nose was probably broken and a few teeth missing from the steering wheel , and a white dress shirt full of blood. I watched him hit.. He did hit the brakes just not in time and it really didn't look like that hard of a hit.. I've put my seat belt on ever since.
