Gidday mate,,do not know what country you are in,,but in Aussie,if you are over 50 you are in deep,if you do not have a trade...i am 63 with no hope..............
Ducky
Get off to Home Depot or Walmart....both of you. :)
Ducky
I didn't think so. :(
ROMOS
B&Q are a huge firm in the UK who claim to be "senior" friendly, they are currently paying people off to avoid giving them promised Christmas bonuses, HO HO HO!!!!!
Ducky
"Paying" them off or "laying" them off? lol
Ducky
If they "pay off" and make it worthwhile, who cares about the Christmas bonus.
ROMOS
Minimum wage, no redundancy money either, stupid contracts.
terryfossil 1
@Duck,No Depot or Walmart in Aussie either Duck,,we are just plain dead weight..>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Clonge
In Australia, is that "WallabyMart"?
Ducky
@terry........... :(
@Clonge....... :)
Ducky
But......has to be call centers and has to be McDonald's....lowly I know but....$$$
ROMOS
McDonalds in the UK prefer young teen workers, even lower than the minimum wage, you don't qualify for the minimum until you're 21.
Ducky
No such thing in Canada that I know of. You'll make minimum wage whether you're a high school kid or a retired senior. McDonald's hires both. And call centers?
ROMOS
Call centres hire & fire at will (target driven) and also zero hour contracts, the UK government are trying to make these contracts illegal, can't come soon enough.
Ducky
What is a zero hour contract? Call centers do the same hire/fire thing here as well but most employees quit anyway....too stressful.
ROMOS
A zero hour contract means you are not guaranteed a shift, you can turn up for work and they can send you home without pay, and you can't have a second job as you are tied to their contract 24/7.
Ducky
Employers cannot do that here. If you show up for a scheduled shift and are sent home (for whatever reason) they must pay you for (I believe) 4 hours, by law. If you are only part-time and working another part-time job, you'll have to work things out with both employers. Logically, if you refuse too many shifts, due to your "other job", you'll be gone. When times are tough and if you're great at your job, most employers are co-operative.
ROMOS
That's why our Govt are trying to make it illegal, but it seems they are struggling to do so for some reason.
Ducky
Business must be fighting it.
ROMOS
Probably, it's a win win for them.

@duck and Romos,,Our contract labour is pretty much the same roy,,however you do not go to work unless you get a phone call or the company you work for informs you the day before,,and Duck, Mcdonalds.same as Roy,they only hire kids, minimum wage,,,Call centres,???we have something called Centrelink,,but they send you to the contract boys,,contract boys get payed by the government if they find you a job,,but 63 year olds wont get a job....>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Ducky
Call centers....Outbound = Sitting in a room with hundreds of others, calling you at home to sell you something (telemarketers) and Inbound = People calling in (unknowingly) to a center for some kind of service, i.e. roadside assistance, banking info, etc., usually thinking that they are speaking directly to the company. They may be speaking to someone in another part of the world i.e. India. I've worked at a call center and called/received calls exclusively into/from U.S.A.
terryfossil 1
Sorry Duck,,yeah we have call centres here too,,most people just hang up on them.. however they have have nothing to do with employment...Always nice talking Duck..>>>><<<<<<
Ducky
I don't understand. They have everything to do with employment. Call centers employ people to work at them. You sit in a call center and call people all day long. You get paid to do that. You would be surprised at the number of people who do NOT hang up on you and actually make a purchase over the telephone.
Ducky
Crap? The job you mean? Sure is but for a while, it put food on my table and paid the rent. You do what ya' gotta do....
terryfossil 1
Sorry Duck, i hope you never called,,because i would have hung up on you,,,SSSSSOOOOOOOO sorry.......
Ducky
You say the same speech about 300 times a day. Who cares if you hang up. It's better than some of the alternatives.
Ducky
For a while terry, I was a call center supervisor....had people crying on my shoulder/quitting almost every day because of things that were said to them. You need really thick skin to work at them. I'm glad that "career" didn't have to last too long. :)
