When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
    And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

I love that poem. That's where they got those social clubs for older ladies called " the Red Hat, Purple Skirt Society ". Now, they just call them , " The Red Hatters " Or-- The Red Hat Club "
Always wished I had a copy, but my printer never worked right. :-( . Reminds me of my mom b/c she had a couple of purple outfits that she was proud of and once told me, " I want to be buried in this outfit someday " So, I had her dressed in it for burial .
Did that author live in England, do you know, Jh ?

I have no clue, let me see, hang on a moment….Jenny Joseph (born 7 May 1932) is an English poet. Thank WIKI

    Fernando Pessoa, a portuguese poet.

It looks as though I'm all alone but here goes.....I don't like poetry!

Actually, I am partial to stuff I've written, but Dickinson, Frost, Shakespeare, Parker, Dr. Seuss, and some I discovered in my poetry writing class last spring.

I haven't written any for awhile but I sure did have fun with it.
I collect lots of note books.
All meant for my new poems.
    And in the end ...
The blue one is for meals served.
The red one is for birthdays.
    Another for gifts
One is for my night dreams
One is for movies I want to see
One is for handy household hints
There is one with Daisies on the cover
    It will be for POETRY!
    Maybe tomorrow.

Hopefully you've recorded THAT in your Daisy notebook!

    Banjo Paterson.An Australian poet.

A little known fact- Banjo had an illegitimate son, Les Paterson.
    Tommyh

LOL. That'll be "Sir" Les to you,but I don't think Banjo sired him.If he did he wouldn't own up to it & I wouldn't blame him.

    Willfred Owen,

    Ogden Nash.

    Sylvia Plath.

I wonder if I could understand her words now that I am, ahem, more mature.

Philip Larkin can be good, especially his poem about what your parents do to you;       'This be the verse'.

    Tommyh

It's short & not too sweet.I wonder what he was thinking when he wrote it?

John Lennon today. It changes by the hour ... and who I'm listening to on the radio and what year they are concentrating on.

Oscar Wilde, his 'Ballad of Reading Jail' is very moving.

Emily Dickenson, Robert Frost, e.e. cummings...
