Here is an actual reason, backed by research:
researchers have discovered that cows stand up for longer periods when it is hot — proving there is a definite link between their behaviour and the weather — because it also suggests they lie down when it is colder, which is often what happens to the weather just before it rains.

Romos, Is that why the chicken crossed the road........b/c it got tired of standing ? Ha ha . Now, it's really getting corny.
Cows will graze and then retreat to lie and ruminate, chewing cud for several hours. They usually lie up on their brisket, not down on their side. Also, usually lying with their front end elevated, to assist in rumination. They chew cud and belch, over and over. I however do not chew cud, just release gas!
