Thanks lovely Lindy. I have been dealing with this since I was a wee girl of nine. Zee doctors told me this would happen and now it has. A few feet of body parts removed and I should be back in the running again! No worries. This is just the hard part.

Your little star has dealt with far more than this

FISH-O what ever you are saying - I do hope you are or will be OK!! please take carexo
    FISH-O

Oh Poppy, I will be fine. This is just collateral damage. I was born in the 60's when the medical industry used people as scientific experiments by accident.

My life was saved way back when and now, I am paying for it. ... This too will pass. :)

    1) Being given an assignment and then being trusted to do it.

    2) Being asked for my input as a frontline worker.

    3) Having the boss/manager express appreciation for my work.

    4) Being given surprise recognition in front of co-workers.

    5) Having a boss who gets rid of lazy co-workers.

    FISH-O

Thank you Ducky. This is valuable. Number five has not shown up until your answer. :)
    Poppy3

Ducky - your Number 5 is good but perhaps the boss should be encouraging more Team Work so essential for most jobs and yes if too lazy to do the job - the boss should show them the door.

I found it frustrating to have to work with people who did the minimum, while others were doing their utmost to meet deadlines and get the job done. It ruins the morale of the business I think.
    Poppy3

Ducky - I understand - I also worked with people who did not pull their weight - I felt this should have been noticed and questioned. My work experience though was not working for a firm as such it was more a vocation but yes it is difficult to watch people always not giving as much to their job as others giving out disrespectful and demoralising signals to those who do work hard/harder - this aspect can often go unseen by management and can sometimes come down to the individuals in the team and also about delegation.
    Ducky

    Agreed.
    FISH-O

Soooooo, what about the working environment could have been different to address the slackers? And, how could have 'the people above you' put in place a system that took care of this problem?
    Poppy3

FISH-O - Never been very good at this managerial stuff - not even good at delegation. I was fortunate. Management I guess could deal with this slacking problem by setting out people's responsibilities, goals and good training I guess. Clear guidelines which they might themselves recognise if they go amiss.
    Ducky

Not sure. Maybe take the slacker aside and stroke his/her ego. Give them some responsibility to "live up to" while expressing confidence in their ability. Sometimes slackers have little self-esteem and need a "push" to step up. When they accomplish the task, give him/her a little more responsibility.

Personally, I'd just say "You're fired"! lol
    FISH-O

Good answers except ... what about the entire environment? If the environment was positive would those slackers be more inclined to give more of themselves?
    Ducky

    Moderator
Not from what I saw. One of the most positive and supportive environments that I ever worked in, had a major slacker. I think it is an individual problem that needs an individual, one-on-one solution. Of course, I also believe that motivation comes from within.
    ROMOS

Slackers are slackers, when I had my own business I gave a few of them a chance (knowing their reputation)sadly NONE of them changed their ways, nothing to do with their work environment, they all knew what they were getting into, and may I say they all knew how to do the job well, some people just want good money for doing very little, it's a fact of life sadly.
    Ducky

Agreed ROMOS. I think that work ethic is developed long before you are into your "career" and where does it come from? You can see kids raised in the same family...one clean, neat, ambitious, the other messy, unkempt and lazy. Why is that? And anyway, can you really change another person...in the work place or elsewhere?
    Poppy3

ROMOS - you are of course right there are slackers - most definately part of life and the human condition regardless - some people make a career of it especially in the NHS. I do feel though that when talking of working environment - so many things come into this - interpersonal relationships etc. and feel some people may be change in a different situation.

Ah enough discussion. Let's just fire all those lazy bums! Get out! Get out now! And don't use my name for a reference either! LOL!!
    Poppy3

Ducky - yeap the script is getting long......
    FISH-O

We can't fire them.... we have to make another job look far more appealing. (Canadian labour laws plus Union contracts. ... People, this is a serious project!) :D
    Ducky

    Moderator
Sadly, I've seen the Canadian labor laws and union contracts in action. I know. A thorough hiring process combined with your gut instincts might avoid some potential problems. I wouldn't know what else to suggest. :(
    FISH-O

I was always very good at hiring to ensure that firing was not something I had to do very often.

There was an instance when someone was "Not a fit" ... I hired the woman to give her a chance at a better life. It was unfortunate. I truly wanted it to work. In my heart, I knew it wouldn't.

When people didn't fit I always found them another job to go to that fit their personalities so much better. My first fire was the only person I could not place in another job. I still regret that day.

The second fire was only because no one else could do it, however, he didn't deserve it at all. He was ganged up on.

The man was fired before he walked into my office for his schedule. I was shocked as I didn't have one for him... I was told that he had been fired. This man did not know. I was placed in a position of explaining to a very nice and hard working man that he had been fired and I didn't actually know why.

His immediate boss was a Coke Head who had wrapped the owners of the company around his pinky finger. Because the owners of the company really liked this Coke Head, I was forced into a position that I did not agree with or felt comfortable with. ... In the end, I was the bad guy. I quit three weeks later right before "Bonus Time". I didn't care about the money. A person can only take so much.

I don't know what happened to Mr. Coke Head. He was the son of a person who at one time was, a very close friend of mine. Mr. Coke Head was also one of my ex-husband's very best friends.

This is the first time I have actually articulated this story. :)

It gets better. The Crowned Prince, son of the owners of the company I worked for, was also a very close friend of the Coke Head as were other managers in the establishment. Drug addicts don't like to party alone.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, that any of those people I was dealing with made one spit of sense..... "Oh, I am going out for lunch. Would you like anything?". (As if lunch would ever show up.) People including, the son of the owners, would actually leave me standing in a busy store alone until the end of the day, showing up at the very end when the owners would pop their heads inside the doors. The very best part is... they would take credit for the work that I did right in front of me. (Dumbfounded has a new meaning)

Then the 'owner wife person' hired someone extremely bad. I actually had my 30 year career decimated by a woman that did not know the industry in which we were working on the heals of Coke Heads. The woman's subject of the day was who she had had relations with inside her mini van. (I actually had the audacity to request that she did not convey these stories any longer... stupid me.)

Fortunately for me, I was smart enough to choose health over money.

That hideous situation is why I am working on a positive project at the moment.

I lost every single friend and my first husband... plus a couple of beautiful children because of that job. I looked evil right in the face.

Now that I am finally writing it down, I feel better.
    :)

If I happened to mention one single little thing, The Crowned Prince would cry to his mother and I was always the bad guy if I happened to "notice" anything, or if I happened to be hurt by the words he said.

... I can't even begin to tell you how much that horrendous child stole from his parents.

"Keep your mouth shut. There is nothing wrong with our Big Round Head Child." (I am not kidding, they call him that.). > The poor boy actually thinks he is good looking.

The work world can be brutal, especially when owners/bosses cannot see things very clearly or when the company is filled with relatives and they CHOOSE not to see things clearly. Ugh.
    FISH-O

    "Brutal" being the key word.
    ROMOS

Good bosses are few and far between, I thought of myself as a fair and honest boss, the tax man and the the SLACKERS thought differently, I was getting screwed from both sides!
    FISH-O

I taught every person who worked for me how to do my job. Now, they are successful. I can be proud.
    ROMOS

I thought every person I employed could do the jobs to the same standard as me,I was wrong, some people just wont take motivation.
    Ducky

    Moderator
Because motivation comes from within. Really hard to motivate some people no matter what you try. They can't seem to grasp that doing a good job will result in personal satisfaction.

I never imagined a duck could be so knowledgable, you should have been swimming in my company, perhaps we'd still be floating.

Speak for yourself. I've been known to show my frustrations at work. I've also been asked my opinion as to whether to fire someone or give them another chance (again) and I've given a resounding "YES! FIRE!"

    1. Getting the money

    2. Negotiating higher paying contracts.

    3.Getting the money

4.Suing the employer for breach of contract... this happened twice in 20 years and it was a pleasure to go to court and win my case and get my money both times because my lawyer was a kick butt musician's union lawyer! YAY!

    5. Getting paid in cash

I was a pro musician 20 years.... travelled all over.... played and then got paid...end of story.

    Poppy3

lindilou - wow impressive, so interesting - musician.
    FISH-O

I am an artist and so this question probably doesn't apply to us Lindi! :D :D :D

Looking from the outside in here! ... You know, that trying to do one 'normal person thing'.

    :D

Grow, learn, love what you do. What is a safe working environment to you?

"Safe" may be the wrong word ... "Healthy" is better.
    lindilou

Poppy3 ... after working rooms that male entertainers wouldn't play in, I am actually quite lucky to be alive... the far Canadian north is no place for women in general... but there I was, singing and playing [guitar, mandolin, banjo] my heart out.... my last five years performing was at festivals and concerts because I am also a songwriter [ecclectic-blues].... but that was all before children changed my life forever... kind of bittersweet really.
Fishes... I have been hiring out my gardening skills and must admit ... I feel safest in the garden with no interference although I am certain that one of my main challenges in life is tolerating[?] others in 'my' space.... I possess the 'loner' gene, I've been called an extroverted introvert... among other things! LOL
    FISH-O

I am an introvert. No one could call me anything else. Life lessons, go figure...

However, I am very sick at the moment. Can't really leave the house unless it is to the Doctor's office or hospital and so, I have taken on a gigantic project of the 'thinking kind'.

What would the perfect environment be if you, Lindi if actually had to be out there in that working world? What would you really want? Pretend you are wearing polyester and not so cool shoes.... your hair is, you know... doing unnatural things and has unnatural dyes in it. ... Out on a limb. ... Go for it... also add fake nails just for flair.
    Poppy3

lindilou - how interesting and brave can just imagine it.
    lindilou

As insane as it sounds.... back in the 'green room' backstage is a relatively safe environ due to the many 'bouncers' present. I loved my life as a musician... it was easy to be a big fish in a little pond... making people happy with groovy music although I must admit that I never wanted to be toooo famous... because of what happened to John [Lennon]... I loved doing radio shows as well... studios are the safest place in the world... I miss that part especially... [going to cry now] [sniffle wimp sputter]
    FISH-O

In those environments you felt protected. ... I thinks everyone wants that ... a place to feel safe, nurtured and eventually in one small way, loved (appreciated).

Great work Lindi. This is what I need. (Dang this time on my hands thing.).

Hopefully, it turns out to do a lot of good. :)
    Poppy3

lindilou - AH lindilou do not cry - you'll get me going - just know how you feel. You had a great time - there is no harm in embrassing your time and made people happy - I just could not live without music. I have met and worked for many famous people even in the States but with regard to the feeling of being famous I only have an inkling - no I was not famous but when nobody seemed to know anyone else's name but mine - I thought retrospectively these last years - this must be what it feels like to be famous and it can be extremely uncomfortable and difficult to live with - no wonder some famous people crack up.
    lindilou

    Awesomeness rules!!!
... so does Eddie > listen while I listen and we shall hear this together...https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=AL94UKMTqg-9B62eTXn6vUTtypLOrkfOP6
    lindilou

Poppy3, it was in retrospect, a massive challenge and the best part was being appreciated for it... and so what is fame really but another form of appreciation! You're famous by me.... and that little Fish! ;D
    Poppy3

lindilou - you are right fame does not do much for anyone - maybe for their wallet but the most important thing is as fishlet says is to feel loved. I like you both lots too - worried about fishlet as I know her - not likely what I hear. For you both 0X0X I will listen to the music now. Do you remember Carole King - she became a recluse I believe - went to live somewhere in the states with electrician and running water in a totally natural environment.
    Poppy3

linfilou - thank you so much for the music - just amazing - never heard of this guy before - I will listen more and get some CDs. thankyou xo
    lindilou

Fishy turned me on to her favorite performer....and it is Eddie Vedder.. so you may thank her too Miss Poppy3! He is wonderful. ;)

It is nice reading both of your words. When people come from a beautiful place it truly is a blessing.

    Thanks.

I’m retired. What I find satisfactory about it is (A) I don’t have to get up anymore (B) I can watch all the trash TV I care to (C) I can read non-stop (D) I can shop at my leisure (E) I can spend time on AKAQA when I want………

That's my life too. And you can go to bed at what ever time you want :-)
    FISH-O

Ladies, this is not a project about retirement... the two of you are beyond hilarious. :)

Have a wonderful day. You both realise that you don't even have to get out of pajamas if you don't feel like it. Woot!
    jhharlan

Okay, I worked 24 years at a factory. Got off at 3:15, started at 7:00 (loved the hours), I knew when I did a good job, had accumulated 5 week paid vacation, worked with good people, It paid well when I was injured or having a baby. That’s five……..
    FISH-O

Julie; You are the kind of employee whom, "Just give a fair shake to and you will flourish until you retire."

    Fair call.

    Nice answer.

FISH-O - (1) A huge amount of satisfaction (rather goes with the caring profession).

    (2) Continuous  motivation, inspiration, insight and at times frustration.

    (3) Teamwork - a must.

    (4) Interpersonal relationships with mutual respect.

    (5) Amazing amount of happiness.

    FISH-O

This is very much in keeping with what I am writing.

    Thank you Poppy.

    Poppy3

FISH-O - Just to say I worked in the National Health Service which is a huge organisation employing (2013) 1.5 million people. Therefore many departments which different sensitivities needed. So important to have good managerial people. Who do not butt in with things they have no understanding of. Difficult to be part of this organisation and see all the bull---t and egos.
Hey did I mention - appreciation - Such good feeling to give and receive - good for moral.
    FISH-O

My Grandmother, Great Aunt and my cousin did and still do work for the National Health Service.

My cousin still works however, my Gran and my Aunt are no longer here.

All three are, were in management.

I am focusing on appreciation within my 'five' list. The project is focused upon simplifying a complex management package bridging the gap between all the employees of a middle sized corporation.

Being self-employed for about 45 years

1, The satisfaction of being your own boss.

2, Employing 5 or 6 other people most of that time, and treating them fairly, probably too fairly,as they made more money than I did.

3, Learning to deal with people running larger businesses, all good experience.

4, Making decisions, about how certain things should be carried out.

5, Being able to have some free time, without having to ask anyone else. Now that I have a part time job in retirement, I don't have that freedom anymore.

We live in a time of recovery from a strange tyranny that is dying and all but forgotten.

    ROMOS

I understand, but I think you're taking this question outside of the context rg.

Hey Fish, having spent 17 years working for an Aussie supermarket giant, and then being unfairly sacked,i will try to keep my anger out of my answer's...........................................................no.1 in any work force is money,if a company pay's a fair wage, a worker should supply fair work,, NO.2 management should attempt to hire people who are going to fit in with the people who are already working there..Sorry Fish,i probably should not have attempted to answered your question,,still way too much anger there...............................................

    FISH-O

This is curious as my project is about 'community' in the work place.

    Valuable information.

Thanks Terry. I really mean that.

At the moment it is a three inch thick binder filled with information.

    This is great. Thanks again.
    Poppy3

Terryfossil - I so know where you are coming from. A. friend told me of the ?coffee store here in London who when taking on more staff they have the present staff there while interviewing the candidate - sounds good to me. I too had reservations about answering this - bad thing happened to me at the end of my career - in fact retired, only part-time - asked to take this job - ended after nine months with unjust crap - not worth worrying about this anymore - just do your best to let it go - console yourself with you did OK and so not them - so easy to say but do not beat yourself up..Take care.
    FISH-O

I would like the two of you to know, the first module of the project is successful. Thanks for your input. :) yay! This can change the working experience for many.
    terryfossil 1

Thanks Poppy 3,,your sentiment is well received, i think we both know where we are coming from,,me and anger were mates for a lot of years,,i got rid of it for nearly 28 years,,this just brought it all back,,,thanks for your words Mate,,>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
