    Genetic Modification, Yes or No?

An example. About 100 years ago a fungus disease wiped out the chestnut trees of N America. Research has developed a resistant tree by splicing a gene from wheat into the chestnut gene, so the tree could make a comeback if the public agree. So what do you think?

Another example of the advantages of GM: In Brazil, dengue fever is rife, so male mosquitoes which carry the disease have been engineered so their offspring die before maturity. In a test last year the mosquito population dropped by 79%

Great. Use it on mosquitos, not in our food.

@FISH-O...Isn't that the truth? More drugs to counteract illnesses from "food drugs". :(

Hey Nom, I am a bit yes and no on that subject,,I think science is a wonderful thing. And there is a good and bad side to all science,,I think maybe it is a good thing if the good outweighs the bad.Problem is ,we do not generally find out what the bad is until after it is made legal..As for your North American tree,,did man give it the Fungus death???or was it a natural fungus death...>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<Always nice talking NOM......

    nomdeplume

Terry, the fungal disease Cryphonectria Parasitica was imported in chestnut trees from Asia. It wiped out about 4 billion trees which was a quarter of all hardwood trees in the US.Man brought the disease, and now Man can make amends.
I am all in favour of GM.

NO! When will we humans learn that nature can take care of things without we "very wise people" getting our noses into everything? We cannot accept that we don't have a better way than nature itself. The pharmaceutical companies rejoice every time we, in our great wisdom, decide that we need yet another chemical/process to make our food better. We really need to wake up and do some more reading into the research that is readily available to all.

I’m yes and no on the subject.  I have a girlfriend who goes out and protest GMO users and only eats organic. She is very fat. I’m for bug free veggies but am cautious what I put in my body…..

Maybe GM foods will help your girlfriend lose weight.

Sure Nom, when she gets the same cancer other GMO consumers are getting, then she too could lose weight...and eventually her life.

Colleen, please let me have some info on people who have had cancer or other illnesses from eating GM foods.

I'll try and find the page I read last month. It spoke of some country in Africa where the village raised and ate only gmo foods. In the last 2 years, there has been a sharp increase in cancerous tumors mainly in the women and children. GMO's do cause cancer in animals, most documentation is about mice and rats. GMOs also kill the bees which our eco-structure depends on. GMO has too great a risk factor and there are too many unknowns. Next up, Soylent green. We are only a step away if we continue to allow uninvestigated foods (we take only the word of the manufacturer) to be created and fed to the populous.

Still looking but I did find this which relates to some of what I said and why I feel GM foods need to be outlawed. http://undergroundhealthreporter.com/genetically-modified-foods/#axzz34vWtc8QR

nom, I had cancer, and it could have been from eating a lot of processed GMO type foods with MSG in them.

I'm against genetic mod b/c they're already doing it to our food. ......the GMO food . And they ad MSG to everything we eat. They don't even have to put it on the label. they're allowed to use euphemisms........like  " polycized  protein "   or  " natural flavors "    Those words mean  MSG.

MSG is banned in the UK (no substitutes allowed)even the Asian food goods we import are checked for this, pity our supermarkets couldn't stop the horse meat from getting into our lasagne,;)

I've heard it is a "main ingredient" in many Chinese foods, and one should ask for "MSG-free" meals when ordering. It can really whack a person who can't tolerate it!
ROMOS, that is good for the UK, definitely. Here, it is sold under the name "Accent". Pure poison you sprinkle out of a red and white container.
    Bob/PKB

Wow, and we are led to believe soy is "good" for us.
Good to know Fish-O. I do read labels and am cautious about sodium content; will become more careful. MSG hasn't been MY friend!

It might be effective aplied to some of the human race, nondeplume.

    Yeah, it's called Population Control
    nomdeplume

    Hitler called it eugenics.

Would you call selective breeding and embryo technology Genetic Modification?

    jhharlan

    You raise a good point…….

I do not agree with genetically modifying anything, especially plant life that we consume (including chestnut tress since people eat chestnuts). GM is known to cause mutations in plants and animals and now people. GM crops have been burned around the world for very good reason. I believe GM foods will kill people and has been designed to do so.

    nomdeplume

If we have no GM foods how do you expect the world to feed the 9,500.000,000 people who will live there in 2050?

Farming and exporting. Plus in areas where little food is available, the people should not be reproducing. Most farms in the USA have been shut down because of the government and trade agreements for us to import food. We could be farming and exporting.
    mycatsmom

    Colleen, population control

It's a dilemma, for sure.  GM  those chestnuts with wheat, and you need to put a big warning for those gluten intolerant folks.

There's been so much "progress" in the last 50 years, one would think we would have been better at anticipating problems and worked on cures and preventatives that didn't come with all the side effects and warning labels. We aren't as smart as we think we are.

For example, our highway construction convinces me that we aren't looking towards our future needs. Already the traffic is backed up on the new stretch of 41 we waited 3 years to see completed.
