Maternally, I know who my grandparents were, but when my grandmother immigrated to the USA, whoever recorded her entry couldn't spell her last name, and Grandma spoke absolutely no English.  The person just wrote "Exline", which was far from correct.  
Paternally, there is a relative who has a pretty thorough genealogy for 3-4 generations back. We lost some family members during the Armenian genocide.  I need to get a copy from him.

On my father's side back over 400 years in Scotland & Ireland.On my mother's side even further back in Germany & Russia.

I have books on both subjects.

On my dad's father's side, they came to the U.S.from England, and from the Isle of Wight  in 1635. They lived in Dedham , Mass ;  and they donated a bushel of  Indian corn toward the construction of Harvard.

My paternal grandmother came to the U.S. in the early 1900s from Bavaria by herself- - - -not knowing the language and not having a job lined up.

All 4 of my mother's grandparents came to the U.S. from Holland. I was named after the late Queen Juliana, of the Netherlands.

Yes mostly appreciated it in adulthood.  As a kid, there was no real cuisine, it was more of get kids fed for lowest cost, as mom was raising 6 kids alone.
