Is it wise to disconnect a car battery for winter storage

Yes. It is a constant drain on the battery when it is hooked up to a car and the car isn't started for a long period of time. That along with the extreme cold are the two things that kill a battery fast.

Disconnect both terminals of the battery, buy a battery tender, not just a trickle charger.  You need something a little more intelligent than just a straight charger set to trickle.  Never store a battery on a concrete floor, it will discharge.

You may also want to treat your fuel system with a product like Stabil to make your spring start up a lot easier. Follow the directions in the bottle and make sure to get some of the product into the upper cylinders to make sure no corrosion occurs during storage.  Also change the oil before and after storage.
