Yes I believe so. For instance, try explaining to someone that has never endured a panic attack. They are clueless to what one would feel like. You have to experience one yourself to truly know the extent of what one is.

My Panic can be overwhelming ...
Some people have a lot of empathy and I believe they can pretty much feel what another is going through. If someone is hurting, these people might be well prepared to have the right words and a caring attitude. A little kid is crying for Mommy. An empathetic person feels the child's pain. That's an easy one, of course.
As people grow up, they learn to hide their feelings but still some people can have correct empathy. From what i've seen in my life, women are more empathetic than men.
There is more I want to say about this but the words aren't coming to me. I've deleted more than I've written. Sensitive subject. Good question!

Not a true statement. You can absolutely learn many things without having to go through it for yourself. If a man runs into a fire a burns up, would you have to run into the fire and burn up too to realize that what he did might not be a good idea. Right.

People COULD learn from others' experiences, but nothing compares to first hand knowledge. Would you rather HEAR about someone's trip to Niagara Falls, or experience the magnificence yourself? Of course, not ALL experiences are pleasurable, and THOSE are the ones it would behoove us to experience vicariously through the pain of others.
Here they are, Niagara Falls, frozen, circa 1932
