Well, as usual...I, again am Wonderering. This time it's weird.(er) I obviously have an intranet connection and pay good money for it,the weird part is that I tripped over the cable that connects to my laptop to the box that the cable company hooked up and the cable disconnected from the box and NEARLY completely ripped out the socket that connects the cable to the laptop. I realized that the cable was not connected. I've still got a good,(even faster) connection. I had a wireless connection ab

out 2 years ago & was already set up to use nearest signal...the cable company said they don't offer "wireless"any more....& gave me a small box, said "SEE YA"and left me with a 5 foot cable. I guess I'll never know if the box was ever working properly to begin with. So, I am assuming, since the bill has been payed monthly, on time, every month...no problem! WHO SHOULD I be paying. & have I  the rite to use it "THIS WAY"....?!? Jst being me...WONDERERin'...

Glad you're ok after tripping on it.

Thanx...did more Phyc.damage than physical...HOWEVER,mycatsmom,I didn't trip ON it...I tripped OVER it ! LOL ...I was much more concerned with the laptop I use...I can fix a LOTS OF STUFF,a laptop is something I'll attempt...LOTS of LITTLE wires to TRY to solder I'm afraid...But...at this point, I got nothin' to lose...

Do you have a modem and a router or just a modem?

    wonderer

Just a modem...they took the older wireless modem/router that I had (2 years ago)and replaced it with a "wired" modem. (It used to blink an orange lite...since the "trip",it stopped blinking& my L.top is 7 times as fast! because whoever's signal I'm getting is obviously a faster service...BUT...am I in compliance with the law(s)?

You have a combined router and wireless (wifi) then. The wifi connects to hotspots so you are not stealing anything. Since the cable port it broken, your computer is now on the wireless network. You should have an option to connect to wireless or local network (which is the hard wire). It seems you are now operating off the wireless connection, so keep it there.

Thanks,Colleen,however...the installer informed me that the company does NOT have, or offer the "WIFI" thing...I get phone service, cable, and internet from Charter Communications. They took my wireless box that I had from 2 years ago and replaced it with this WIRED ONLY box. Right now I think I'm connected via a network in my area. Not mine.

One, they can not just take your wifi, it's yours not theirs. Charter Cable, they have DSL, not cable(?). They still need to give you back your router. The only way to connect to someone else's internet is with a wifi which still makes me think you have a modem/wifi combo.

I have a few calls to make in the A.M...Charter is #2...thanx

Sorry, you can connect to another wifi network through your computer if your computer has a wireless card. No router needed on your end. I'm a little tired tonight and was not thinking clearly. I just read your edit above. If the router was theirs, fine, they keep it. If it was yours, get it back.

You are a bit of a worrier wonderer, if your cables not connected and you're getting a good signal, you could be connecting to a neighbours WiFi I suppose. If you are still paying for it, I wouldn't worry just carry on, you haven't deliberately done anything illegal, yet. You could cancel any future payments, and then see if you are still getting a signal, that would be a bit crafty, and probably illegal. But you would have the last laugh.

Iv'e got a plan....EVERY ONE ON THIS SITE: Split the cost of the intranet-instead of paying them...just send the money to me & we'll all be happy....LOL (of course, just kiddin'!)

Ah, you're more crafty than you let on wonderer, lol.
